New Ambulance Blessing

At Sunset all those who had friends suffering from diseases of one kind or another brought them to Jesus, and laying his hands on each he cured them.

(Luke 4:40)

Let us pray:

God of all consolation, your son Jesus went about healing all manner of diseases: continue his work today through the hands of those who work for the sick. Give them knowledge and wisdom, patience and sympathy; and make fruitful their ministry. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Send your blessing, Lord God,

Upon doctors, nurses and the crew of this new ambulance serving the people of Corca Dhuibhne.

Enable them to make progress against disease and illness, to ease the sufferings of the afflicted,

And to encourage healthy living.

May the gifts you have given them

Be used to restore the ill to health so that they may again work for your greater glory.

We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

Trócaire Appeal for the Horn of Africa Bishop Bill Murphy has written to all parishes in advance of the forthcoming Trócaire appeal. Dear Father, You will be aware of the heightening crisis in Somalia, Ethopia and Kenya, where famine is emerging because of a failure in the seasonal rains over the past two years. Now up to 12 million people are at immediate risk, more than half of them children. Over one thousand a day are moving from Somalia into camps in Northern Kenya. Trócaire has been engaged with this crisis from their offices in Nairobi, Northern Kenya and Ethiopia, for the past two years. A national collection will be taken up at all Masses on 23rd and 24th July. Trócaire will arrange national advertising in the preceding week to support this appeal. Despite the severe economic circumstances in the country people are asked to respond to the appeal in accordance with their own means. Your sincerely, + Bill Murphy

RCIA Launched in Corca Dhuibhne

The parishes of the Corca Dhuibhne Pastoral Area – Annascaul, Baile an Fheirtéaraigh, Castlegregory and Dingle announced the launch of their joint RCIA programme this weekend. The RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults) is the programme of preparation for preparing interested non-baptised adults and non-Catholic Christians for full membership of the Catholic Church.

It was the 2^nd Vatican Council that called for the establishment of the RCIA and the programme has its roots in the early days of Christianity when the majority of those entering the Church were adults seeking baptism.  The preparation of these adults was not just the job of the clergy, but a process involving the whole Church community. Similarly, the RCIA is not simply a course of instruction or teaching, but aims to be a process of initiation gradually introducing interested enquirers to the example and teaching of Jesus Christ and the life, teaching and practices of the Catholic Church. To assist in this process, a small group of people – Sheila O’Donnell, Geraldine O’Mahony, Barbara Prendergast and Fr Jim Sheehy – has been meeting since the start of the year.  Their responsibility will be to help and guide those interested on the journey of enquiry. Their role is not so much that of experts capable of supplying ready-made answers, but of being fellow-travellers on the same road who are willing to offer support, guidance and understanding as the enquirer deepens his or her own understanding of the faith.

The RCIA is unfamiliar territory for many Irish parishes, but is a central part of parish life in other parts of the world. Fr Jim brings his experience of ministry in England where the programme is well-established and it might surprise Irish Catholics to learn that through the RCIA programmes in parishes across the United States of America more than 100,000 adults were welcomed into the Catholic Church last year. Because the parish itself has a role in supporting enquirers, welcoming new members and in giving witness to the Christian way of life, the establishment of the RCIA programme by the parishes of Corca Dhuibhne is a response to Christ’s words “Go out and spread the Good News” and shows the conviction that the message of Christ is not a burden, but something life-giving that the parishes wish to share.  It is only by extending an invitation to “come and see” that the Christian community can be enriched and become more truly the “Body of Christ”. The launch of the RCIA is therefore an invitation – an invitation to those who might be interested in the Church and Christ’s Gospel to contact any of their local parish clergy for more information. It is also an invitation to Catholics to pray for the success of the programme and bring it to the attention of anyone they know who would be interested in finding out about the Catholic faith.  Rath Dé ar an obair.
