Bliain an Chreidimh – Our Patron Saints Laochra an Chreidimh No. 76.
Saint Kevin. I have chosen St. Kevin as my Confirmation Saint because he was brilliant with all sorts of animals and I would love if my Confirmation saint could help me be better with animals. Also, Saint Kevin showed his love in God when he forgot his life in the urban world. He reshaped his life in a rural place called Glendalough where he built his monastery. There are many stories based on St. Kevin. One such story is when he was standing in a lake and a bird landed in his hand, the bird laid an egg and St Kevin stayed in that very spot until the egg hatched. (Ben – Scoil Iognáid Rís)

Nollaig na mBan – Women’s Christmas
Nollaig na mBan – Women’s Christmas is sometimes called Women’s Little Christmas or Small Christmas. The tradition, still very strong in Cork and Kerry is so called because of the Irish men taking on all the household duties for the day. Most women hold parties or go out to celebrate the day with their friends, sisters, mothers, and aunts. Bars and restaurants serve mostly women and girls on this night. Children often buy presents for their mothers and grandmothers. The tradition honours all women within the 12 Days of Christmas.
Guímis go raibh suáilcí Mháthair Dé mar lón anama, chun misneach agus chun dóchas a thabhairt do mhná an domhain ina n-iarrachtaí cothrom na Féinne a bhaint amach. Amen
20+C+M+B+14 – Blessing Our Home
There is a lovely custom practised in Central Europe on the eve of 6 January. This involves writing in chalk above the front doors of houses the letters C, M, and B enclosed by the numerals of the New Year. For 2014, then, the inscriptions would look like 20+C+M+B+14. The letters themselves have a double meaning. They stand for the traditional names of the Magi, or three wise men, who visited the Christ Child – Caspar, Melchior and Balthasar – but they also function as the initials of a blessing for the home: ‘Christus Mansionem Benedicat’ (May Christ Bless this House). (Salvador Ryan, N.U.I. Maynooth)
Gospel Reflection For Youth
This Sunday’s Gospel is from John. It is the first Sunday Gospel of the Year 2014 and it tells us about the beginning! At the beginning of a New Year we read about the beginning of Christianity and how John came to shine a light on Jesus and how Jesus came and shone a light on all of us. Jesus came to allow us the opportunity to let our light shine. How do you think you can do this? Have you let your beauty and goodness shine this Christmas? Can you do anything today to connect you to the real love in your heart for the people around you, for yourself, for the world in general and for God. Think about those connections and spend some time thinking about how you can stay connected! Happy New Year. (Intercom Magazine)
