Thought for the day: The multiplication of the loaves generates many levels of meaning, often deeply spiritual. At a more ordinary level, we see an anonymous boy with the bread and fish making available what little he had for the Lord to make use of them. Placing ourselves at his disposal, offering whatever gifts we have is all that is asked of each of us. Prayer: Lord Jesus, we know that you see potential where we see limits. All we have and are is your gift in the first place. Help us to place ourselves and your gifts at your disposal for the service of the Kingdom.

Pope Francis on X: Let us pray, brothers and sisters, for peace. Let us not forget tormented Ukraine, Palestine, Israel, Myanmar, and many other countries that are at war. Let us not forget, let us never forget, war is a defeat!

Songs of Praise with Michael Fitzgerald and others will take place in St Mary’s Church, next Monday, 29 July between 6.00 – 7.00pm.

Prayer for the Fourth World Day

for Grandparents and the Elderly

Lord, faithful God,

You who created us in Your image,

You who never leaves us alone and who accompanies us through every season of life, do not abandon us, take care of us,

And grant us, once again,

The ability to discover ourselves

and recognise that we are Your children.

Renew our hearts with your Word

And do not allow anyone to be cast aside.

May your Spirit of love fill us with Your tenderness and teach us to say:

“I will not abandon you!”

To those we meet on our journey.

With the help of your beloved Son,

may we not lose the taste for fraternity

And may we not conform to the sadness of loneliness.

Help us to look to the future with renewed hope,

And make the World Day for Grandparents and the Elderly a day without loneliness, and a day abundant with the first-fruits of Your peace. Amen.

Prayer of Blessed John Henry Newman:

O Lord, support us all the day long, until the shadows lengthen, the evening comes, and the busy world is hushed, and the fever of life is over, and our work is done. Then, Lord, in thy mercy, grant us a safe lodging, a holy rest, and peace at the last.

Osclaíonn tú do lámh, a Thiarna, agus sásaíonn tú sinn (Sm 144)
