Pilgrimage to Northumbria – An Díseart

Sunday 17th – 24th July 2011

Pilgrimage to Northumbria

An Díseart

Sunday 17 – Sunday 24 July 2011

Flying out from Cork airport the Pilgrimage tour will follow the footsteps of Aidan and the Irish monks from Iona who in 635 AD initiated a mission to the Kingdom of Northumbria. Within 30 years they established the Church as a centre for missionary outreach to the rest of England and indeed to the Continent of Europe.

The Pilgrimage will take us from Lindisfarne to Whitby; from the wonderful Romanesque Cathedral of Durham to the spectacular Gothic York Minster; from Aidan’s Parish Church and Oswald’s Castle Bamburgh to Cuthbert’s Church on the Farne Islands; from Bede’s Monastery to the “World of St Bede” in Jarrow.  Visiting these historic and holy places within the rich agricultural land and beautiful scenery of the North East of England should prove a breathtaking and inspirational event.

Group limited to 25, Cost €700. More details next week, contact An Díseart 9152476 for booking.

Cost: €700. For further details on the Pilgrimage, or if you need more information please contact Fr. Jim at jimsheehy@diseart.ie; mobile phone no: 0862625498 or Isabel Bennet at isbennet@iol.ie; phone 9159012 or An Díseart at:  9152476.

Naomh Vailintín, Pátrún an Ghrá – Mairtíreach

Cérbh é Naomh Vailintín? Sagart agus mairtíreach a cuireadh chun báis sa Róimh breis is 1,700 bliain ó shin.

Cén fáth gur cuireadh chun báis é? Mar thug sé a bheannacht do lánúineacha a bhí I ngrá! Ní raibh fonn ar na fir óga san am sin troid in arm an Impire Rómhánaigh, Claudius. Chuir Claudius an milleán ar na mná agus d’ordaigh sé gach pósadh agus gealltanas pósta a chur ar ceal agus bhí an bás i ndán d’aon duine a chuirfeadh ina choinne. Níor aontaigh Vailintín leis sin. Cuireadh i bpríosún é agus dícheannadh é sa Róimh ar an 14ú Feabhra 269/270 A.D.

“Christianizing” Valentine’s Day

On Saint Valentine’s Day, we Christians have an opportunity for some real “inculturation” — that is, planting seeds of Christ’s truth into the culture in which we live.

When we remember that the heart of Saint Valentine was, like other Christian martyrs, “pierced” by the love of Our Lord, and he shed his blood for this, it seems appropriate that the red heart is a symbol for this powerful love. We think about the power of the love of God – our love for Him and His for us – to inspire our love for others. It is this kind of love that gives heart (or “en-courages”) to faithful Christians to accomplish deeds of extraordinary courage – even unto death – to bring the truth of faith to others. We are reminded, too, that suffering that often accompanies genuine love.

In our Catholic families, we can focus our thoughts, this day, not only in expressing our love for our friends and families (and yes, sweethearts) by gifts and loving greetings; but also in prayer and meditation on Scripture.

Prayer to St. Valentine
Almighty God, grant we beseech You,
that we who celebrate the glorious martyrdom of St. Valentine, Your servant, may by his intercession be filled with the love of God and neighbour and be delivered from all the evils that threaten us.

We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen
