Mission Crib Collections
This year the Crib offerings from Naomh Muire, Naomh Caitlín agus Naomh Eoin Baiste will be given to local foreign missionaries Fr. Tommy Lynch in India and his brother Fr. Danny Lynch in Paraguay. Both, from Milltown, Dingle work with the world’s poorest in their Divine Word Missions. Bígí Fial.
Parish Envelope Scheme and Calendar 2011
Every household has received a Féilire Eaglasta 2011 and a box of envelopes for your weekly offertory contribution. Also included is an envelope for your Christmas Dues contribution. The Offertory collection funds all running costs and maintenance in our Parish, including insurance, staffing and Diocesan Levy. Tax can also be claimed back by the Parish if any PAYE taxpayer has contributed over €250. We invite every household to participate in this vital scheme and invite new parishioners to register by contacting the Parish Office on 9151208. A full account of both income and expenditure will be published in the New Year. We thank all our collectors, committee members, counting teams and teangmhálaithe / contact people who serve tirelessly in this essential Parish work.

Epiphany of the Lord – 6th Jan. Learning from the Magi
The great thing about the Magi was their faith. Even though they were outsiders (Gentiles), they recognised Christ as the Saviour of the world. They are models of faith for us.
The picture many people have of how the Magi came to Bethlehem goes somewhat like this. They saw a bright star in the eastern sky and began to follow it. The star guided them unerringly, first to Jerusalem, where it temporarily disappeared, and then to Bethlehem where they found the Child Jesus.
Their journey was neither simple nor easy. They encountered difficulties, doubts and dangers. Yet, in spite of these they persevered in their quest, and were rewarded when they finally found Christ. This is why their story has such relevance for us. Like them we too are on a journey. When we start out on some road, we too are attracted by something bright – an ideal or vision or hope. And we must expect to encounter difficulties and doubts. Some people think they are losing their faith when they experience doubt. We must not be surprised when this happens. We must imitate the Magi. We must not be too proud to ask for guidance. We must believe that the darkness will pass, and once again we will see the initial star beckoning to us.
The Magi can serve as models for us on our faith journey. They were single-minded. They refused to be put off by difficulties and hardships. When they found Christ they offered him gold, frankincense and myrrh. This shows what happens to those who find Christ. Their hearts are awakened and burst into life. When we find Christ and offer our love to him, he will help us to open up the treasures of goodness that lie buried inside us, so that we can offer ‘gifts’ to our brothers and sisters, especially those who are poor as Christ was. Having worshipped Christ, the Magi, ‘returned to their own country by another route’. This suggests not just a new geographical route, but a new mentality. Having met Christ and heard the Gospel, we too will travel through life by a different route.

Prayer for the New Year
Lord, grant us in all our tasks your help,
in all our doubts your guidance,
in all our weaknesses your strength,
in all our dangers your protection,
and in all our sorrows your consolation.
Give us the kind of faith
that will enable us to live out joyfully
the mystery of our fragile human condition,
which sees us suspended between earth and heaven,
between time and eternity,
between nothingness and infinity. Amen.
Friday Penance
The following are suggested ways of fulfilling Friday penance:
Abstaining from meat or some other food;
Abstaining from alcoholic drink or smoking;
Making a special effort at involvement in family prayer;
Making a special effort to participate in Mass;
Visiting the Blessed Sacrament;
Making the Stations of the Cross;
Fasting from all food for a longer period than usual and perhaps giving what is saved to the needy;
Helping the poor, sick, old or lonely.
