Confirmation 2012

A cháirde,

Bishop Liam Ó Murchú has informed us that the sacrament of Confirmation will be celebrated in St Mary’s, Dingle on Tuesday 20th March 2012 at 3.30pm.  We therefore invite the parents and guardians of the sixth class pupils in our parish primary schools who are interested in having their children confirmed to a meeting in An Díseart, Green Street at 8.15pm this Monday night, September 12th.

The purpose of this meeting is to introduce our parish and diocesan programme of preparation for Confirmation and to distribute enrolment forms for candidates.  Because of the importance of this meeting, we will only distribute enrolment forms to families who are present at the meeting. Parents and guardians who cannot attend on the night are asked to contact either Fr Tomás or Fr Bernard at the presbytery (066 9151208) to learn about the Confirmation preparation programme and to receive an enrolment form. Enrolment Sunday is Sunday 25th September.

Through the sacrament of Confirmation, the candidate receives the gifts of the Holy Spirit to strengthen and confirm him or her in the faith in order to follow Christ more closely and bear witness to the love of God.  As a parish, our mission is to support these candidates for confirmation and to help them and their families grow in faith.  We therefore invite all our parishioners to pray for our young people as they prepare for this sacrament.

Yours in Christ

Tomás B Ó Luanaigh SP

Bearnard Ó hÉalaithe SC

PS The parents of secondary school students who have not yet been confirmed are invited to contact Fr Tomás or Fr Bernard directly or through your school’s chaplain.

Eucharistic Adoration

You are invited to an information meeting re the setting up of a Diocesan Eucharistic Adoration Committee that has the blessing, support and encouragement of Bishop Murphy. Please advise the Parish Office on 066-9151208 by Wednesday next Sept 14th if you are interested in attending this meeting.

Enquiring about the Catholic Faith – RCIA

The parishes of the Corca Dhuibhne Pastoral Area – Annascaul, Baile an Fheirtéaraigh, Castlegregory and Dingle recently launched their joint RCIA programme. The RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults) is the programme of preparation for preparing interested non-baptised adults and non-Catholic Christians for full membership of the Catholic Church. The RCIA is not simply a course of instruction or teaching, but aims to be a process of initiation gradually introducing interested enquirers to the example and teaching of Jesus Christ and the life, teaching and practices of the Catholic Church. To assist in this process, a small group of people – Sheila O’Donnell, Geraldine O’Mahony, Barbara Prendergast and Fr Jim Sheehy – has been preparing to offer this programme in our Pastoral Area. Their responsibility will be to help and guide those interested on the journey of enquiry.

Because the parish itself has a role in supporting enquirers, welcoming new members and in giving witness to the Christian way of life, the establishment of the RCIA programme by the parishes of Corca Dhuibhne is a response to Christ’s words “Go out and spread the Good News”. This shows the conviction that the message of Christ is not a burden, but something life-giving that the parishes wish to share.  It is only by extending an invitation to “come and see” that the Christian community can be enriched and become more truly the “Body of Christ”. The RCIA is therefore an invitation – an invitation to those who might be interested in the Church and Christ’s Gospel to contact any of their local parish clergy for more information. It is also an invitation to you as Catholics to pray for the success of the programme and bring it to the attention of anyone you know who would be interested in finding out about the Catholic faith.  Rath Dé ar an obair.

Introducing the New Missal

Today for the first time, we see the new texts  for Mass in our parish missalettes. However, we will continue to use the old translation until November 27th, the First Sunday of Advent. We will become familiar with them over the next while so that we will be able to pray with them more easily from the First Sunday of Advent.  As you will see, some of our responses will be different, and they will sound unfamiliar to our ears at first. However, the order and structure of the Mass is not changed.   Nor are the readings changed.  Over time, we will become familiar with the prayers which have very slightly changed, for example, in the Holy, Holy, we say “Lord God of hosts” and in the response to “Pray, brothers and sisters,” the addition of one word, “holy,” before “Church.”   Other prayers have much more changes and where we now say “And also with you” we will then say “And with your spirit.”

What is the Roman Missal?

The term ‘Missal’ is used to refer to the book that contains all the prayers and instructions for the celebration of the Mass. The Missal is first written in Latin and this Latin text is then translated into the particular language of the people. In this way, while the Mass may be celebrated in many languages across the Roman Catholic world, it is the same core Latin text that is being prayed by the Church. We have been using our current Missal since St. Patrick’s Day 1975. It is sometimes referred to as the Missal of Pope Paul IV. Now we have a new edition of that Missal. (to be continued).
