World Report –Sunday Oct 14th on RTÉ Radio 1 at 8:10am reports on the Pilgrimage to Rome in the footsteps of Msgr. Hugh O’Flaherty whose Escape Line rescued 6,500 Jews, Allied troops and others during WWII.

Year of Faith
October 11th 2012 – November 24th 2013
The Year of Faith began on Thursday October 11, 2012. It is a timely and much-needed call from the Holy Father for a renewed dedication to the Faith.
For the next 12 months we plan to bring you a profile of a Faith Hero/Heroine. We will invite all our Confirmation candidates to write a Faith profile of their chosen Confirmation Patron Saint for publication in future newsletters.
Faith Heroes and Heroines No.2
Pauline Marie Jaricot was born in Lyon, France on July 22nd 1799. In 1818 she organised the female workers in her brother-in-laws’s silk factory as the Association of Women who make Reparation and went on to form the Association for the Propagation of Faith in Lyon on the 3rd of May 1822. In 1826 she founded the Living Rosary. Four years later Pauline Jaricot set up the Bank of Heaven and invested her entire family inheritance in an effort to promote a more socially just way for the workers of Lyon.
The Association for the Propagation of the Faith was established in Ireland with its first meeting in the Parochial House, Exchange Street, Dublin on the 18th of September 1838. However, in 1852 she was declared bankrupt and lived the rest of her life in poverty. She died in Lyon on January 9th 1862.
Getting Involved.
What could a teenage girl do about the woes of the whole world? Well, she could forget about them. Or blame everyone else for them. Or make shocked noises, and leave it at that. Pauline Jaricot took responsibility instead. She could do something, whatever she could, to set things right. She could give herself, her time, her energy, her money – whatever it took.
The sick and suffering bothered her, so she spent part of her days working in the hospitals. She wasn’t very good at it, but they knew she cared, and that helped. She set about making the world say its prayers, she parcelled out decades of the Rosary, one to each person, so that someone was praying a little practically all the time. After a while there were three million people in her Living Rosary association. There was one other thing. Pauline Jaricot was a very good girl, despite a hasty temper, a quick tongue, and a lot of vanity.
Caring and giving
Pauline Jaricot was only a girl, a very young girl, who lived a long time ago. But she set something in motion that one hundred and ninety years later is still doing a marvellous amount of good in the world. She cared, and she gave herself. Any one, girl or boy, man or woman, can do that much. Even you. Last year alone the Catholic people of Ireland sent €2,000,000 to missionary communites in need. Gura bhfada buan é. Bígí Flaithiúil arís.

The Year of Faith
A Series of talks, at the Díseart on Wednesday 8.00pm to 9.30pm, to commemorate the “Year of Faith” marking the 50th anniversary of the opening of the Second Vatican Council.
The sessions will be led by Fr. Jim Sheehy with guest speaker Geraldine O’Mahony.
Oct. 17th – The Vatican Council – Then and Now.
Oct. 24th – Pope Benedict’s Message Inaugurating the “Year of Faith”.
Nov. 7th – The Faith – In Theory and in Practise.
Nov. 14th – St. Paul: Teacher and Model of the Faith.
Nov. 21st – St. Paul: Faith and Justification.
Nov. 28th – Faith Revisited.

Dec. 5th – Ways in which we can Grow in Faith.
There will be time for questions and discussion at each session. The session will end with a brief prayer service; and there will be light refreshments and an opportunity for a chat after each session. Everybody Welcome.
Mission Sunday
Mission Sunday takes place this year on October 21st. It is the one day set aside each year for Catholics worldwide to recommit themselves to the Church’s missionary activity through prayer and sacrifice. The Mission Sunday collection supports Young Churches and missionaries in meeting the spiritual and material needs of men, women and children in poorer countries overseas.
The annual Diocesan collection for the Propagation of the Faith will be taken up next weekend the 20th/21st of October as a second collection after Communion.
