2012 is a very special year in the life of the Christian and Presentation Brothers. This year marks the 250th Anniversary of the birth of Blessed Edmund Rice in Callan on the 1st of June 1762.
Launch of Edmund Rice Beyond 250 Appeal
On the 2nd of May, 2012 an event to launch a year long Appeal amongst the followers and supporters of Blessed Edmund Rice was held in the Marino Institute of Education, Marino, Dublin.
Br. Philip Pinto, Congregational Leader of the Christian Brothers writes:
“We wish to involve all people of good will to work with us. And so, we are inviting people into collaborative ministry with us. Some help us through funding, others through their prayers and good will, and a few join us. The invitation for you is to be part of this whole project, reaching out to our brothers and sisters less well off than ourselves. Edmund Rice died in 1844, but the story continues.”

St. Brendan was born around 484 in Luachra, near Tralee. He was baptised in Tubrid. He became a monk. He left from Brandon harbour in the year 501, in a flimsy Naomhóg, without any map or satnav. He brought 14 other monks with him. It was a damp and dirty morning when he set sail. He searched for China, Australia, Japan and eventually discovered America.
On their travels, they found an island with lots of grapes and stayed there for forty days. They also found an island with a boy on it who gave them bread and water when they were hungry. They discovered an island of sheep. They passed a silver pillar with a net wrapped around it at sea. They found the promised land of saints and when they passed an island of blacksmiths, they had slang thrown at them. They found a volcano. They went to the ailbe monastery for a Christmas break.
When he was seventy he sought a wife but I don’t know if he found one!
I chose Saint Brendan because I like his spirit of adventure. He also wanted to live in Ventry. He died in Galway around 577.

Saint Clare Of Assisi is the patron Saint of sore eyes. She was the daughter to Phaionno Sciffo. They had three daughters Clare, Agnes and Beatrice. Saint Clare was born in 1194 at Assisium, a city in Italy built on a stony mountain called Assisi. Clare is also the Patron Saint of Television, goldsmiths, laundry, embroiders, gilders, good weather, needle workers, Santa Clara Puebelo, telephones and telegraphs.
St. Clare of Assisi died on August 11th 1253. She was 59 years.
I picked Saint Clare of Assisi because she is the patron saint of eye disease. If I ever get eye disease, I could pray to Satin Clare. She is the Saint of a lot of things. She sounds like an inspirational Saint!

Luke’s Gospel Talks
To celebrate the Year of Faith, Fr. Séamus O’Connell will give two nights’ presentation on Luke’s Gospel. On Friday Feb 1st, Fr. Séamus will take the theme: Opening Luke’s Gospel as a Story of Faith and on Friday Feb 15th, he will explore Jesus in Luke: Our Saviour Today. Each evening will begin with Mass @ 6.15 pm. followed by refreshments, followed by his exploration of the Gospel from 7.30 – 9.30pm. The evenings will take place in St. Brendan’s Pastoral Centre, Upper Rock St. Tralee, and the cost is €5 per night. If possible, please bring a Bible or the Gospel of Luke with you. Catholic Schools Week 2013
Catholic Schools Week will be celebrated on the week of Sunday January 27th to February 3rd 2013. The theme this year is “Catholic Schools in the Community of Faith: Sharing the Good News”.
Catholic Schools Week 2013 at Home
This is the fifth year of celebrating the wonderful contribution that Catholic schools make, not only to their local communities, but to Irish society as a whole. This year’s theme acknowledges the faith community in which the Catholic school is rooted. It draws our attention to the interconnectedness between these faith communities and reminds us that the school is really an extension of both the church at home and the local parish church. This year has been declared a Year of Faith by Pope Benedict XVI. The year began on October 11 2012, and will end on November 24 2013. During this year we are all being asked to pray, deepen our understanding of our own faith, give witness by the way we live, and serve those who are in need. Catholic Schools Week 2013 offers us an opportunity to think about how we can do these things within our family, which is the most important place where children learn about and experience their faith.
Share the Good News
One of the most important things that parents can teach their children is that God loves them always. Read these words from the prophet Isaiah with your child to remind us all how much we are loved by God:
Thus says the Lord, do not be afraid,

Catholic Schools Week 2013 in School
Catholic Schools are encouraged to set up a Sacred Space to celebrate Catholic Schools Week. Schools can use a green cloth as the basis for their sacred space. (Green is the liturgical colour for Ordinary Time.) You can also place the following objects in the sacred space:
· A candle
· A Bible. (Use a stand to highlight the importance of the Sacred Scripture)
· Cross or crucifix
· Holy water
· A framed copy of your school’s Ethos Statement or the Catholic School Schedule
· Your school motto or crest
· A picture of your school’s patron saint or founder
· A Brigid’s cross and flowers. These can be added to the sacred space on Friday, signifying the traditional beginning of springtime on St Brigid’s Day.
