St. Bridget may have been born in Dundalk, Co. Louth. According to her biographers her parents were Dubhthach, a Pagan chieftain of Leinster and Brocca, a Christian Pict and slave who had been baptised by Saint Patrick. Some accounts of her life suggest that Bridget’s father was in fact from Lusitania, kidnapped by Irish pirates and brought to Ireland to work as a slave, in much the same way as Saint Patrick. Many stories also detail Bridget’s and her mother’s statuses as pieces of property belonging to Dubhthach, and the resulting impact on important parts of Bridget’s life story.
The Vita outlined Bridget’s early life. It says that Bridget’s mother was a slave and Bridget herself was born into slavery to a druid. From the start, it is clear that Bridget is holy. Bridget performs many miracles, including healing and feeding the poor. On one occasion, a leper comes to Bridget and begs for a cow. After she ask the man to wait, he refuses and says he will go elsewhere. When she offers to heal him of his leprosy, he refuses her offer, claiming that it helps him get pity. After convincing him otherwise, Bridget performs another miracle, curing him using a blessed cup of water. In a similar fashion, Bridget later cures two sister who had been dumb since birth by instructing them to pour a mixture of her blood and water onto their necks.
I chose Bridget because my Nan had the same name and I like her dedication to God.

St. Margaret of Hungary was born in Kilis Fortress in the Kingdom of Croatia, the eighth and last daughter (9th of 10 Children) of the royal couple. The four year old Margaret was put into the Dominican Monastery. Six years later she was transferred to the Monastery of the Blessed Virgin where she spent the rest of her life. She dedicated herself to religion. She went out of her way to perform the most menial tasks on behalf of the squalid poor and most advanced hospital cases. The extend of her labours and fasting and hours of prayer brought on the fatigue of which she died on January 18th, her feast day and she became the Saint of labourers.
I picked this name because it’s in my family and I liked that she cared for the sick and the poor.

Feast Days
Saturday February 2nd is Candlemas Day and the Feast of the Presentation. On this day we celebrate the Presentation of the Child Jesus in the Temple. Also, candles are traditionally blessed today.
Sunday February 3rd is the Feast of St. Blaise. On this day throats are blessed with a crossed candle in his memory.
St. Blaise, bishop of Sebaste in Armenia, is believed to have been martyred in the early fourth century. Very little is know about him. Tradition states that he was a physician before becoming a bishop. Since the eighth century he has been venerated as the patron of those who suffer from disease of the throat. He is said to have healed a boy who was choking. The blessing of St. Blaise is a sign of our faith in God’s protection and love for us and for the sick.
Using two crossed and unlighted candles, blessed on the memorial of St. Blaise or on the feast of the Presentation of the Lord, the Priest touches the throat of each person, saying:
Through the intercession of St. Blaise, bishop and martyr, may God deliver you from all ailments of the throat and from every other evil (or from every disease of the throat and from every other illness):
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.
Getting Married (Part 1)
1. Contact the local clergy where you reside permanently before booking. Permission must be received from the bride’s Parish Clergy to celebrate your wedding outside her Parish.
2. Book the priest who has agreed to marry you. Check that he is officially registered as a Solemniser by the Irish State.
3. Each person must complete the Pre-Nuptial Enquiry Form with the priest of the Parish where he/she resides, the following are required:-
(i) A long form Baptismal Certificate issued within six months of the proposed date of the marriage;
(ii) Proof of Confirmation, (if not recorded on the Baptismal Certificate);
(iii) Proof of Freedom to Marry, either of the following:-
(a) Letter of Freedom from parishes where he/she has lived for 6 months or more;
(b) Swear an affidavit before a Commissioner of Oaths stating he/she has never been married religiously or civilly in any jurisdiction.
(iv) If previously married or non-catholic, permissions and dispensations are applied for through your own clergy. (To be Contd)
