Our Patron Saints / Laochra an Chreidimh No. 94. Mary is known as the Blessed Virgin, Mother of God. Her date of birth is not known but is celebrated every 8th of September. Mary was engaged to a carpenter named Joseph and became the mother of Our Lord. She was visited by the Angel Gabriel who told her she would become pregnant with the Messiah through immaculate conception. While Mary was pregnant, a decree was ordered requiring Joseph to return to his hometown of Bethlehem where he could be taxed. Mary gave birth in a stable there. Mary is not mentioned a lot in the Bible but was present at the crucifixion of Our Lord.
The Blessed Virgin appeared 6 times to 3 children in Fatima, Portugal between May and October 1917. She said it was important to pray the Rosary daily. It was her favourite prayer as it reflects on the life of her Son. She also appeared on numerous occasions in 1858 to a 14 year old girl called Bernadette in Lourdes, France. On the 21st of August 1879 fifteen people including men, women and children witnessed an apparition of Our Lady, St. Joseph and St. John the Evangelist at the gable end of a small parish church in Knock Co. Mayo.
May is the month when we celebrate Our Lady by crowning a statue of Mary with flowers and making altars in our houses and schools. Mary’s signature prayer is the Hail Mary:
Hail Mary, full of grace
The Lord is with thee,
Blessed art thou among women
And blessed is the fruit of thy womb Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God,
Pray for us sinners now
And at the hour of our death, Amen.
I chose Mary as my confirmation name as my Nan died a few years ago and she was named Mary. My other Nan has Mary as her middle name also. (Maeve – Scoil Eoin Baiste)
Corpus Christi 2014 / Neighbourhood Station Masses
In preparation for our annual Corpus Christ procession on June 22nd 2014 the Neighbourhood Station Masses for the residents of Main Street will be celebrated on this Thursday May 8th at 7.30pm in The Temperance Hall. Consequently, there will be no Mass on these Thursdays in St. Mary’s Church, as these Masses are open to all parishioners in preparation for Corpus Christi Sunday June 22nd.

Santa Fé’s Spiral Staircase – Mayday Machnamh
A French architect had designed the Santa Fé chapel for the Sisters of Loreto in close imitation of the famous “Sainte Chapelle” in Paris. It was a small chapel and he forgot to provide enough room for a staircase leading up to the choir loft 22 feet above.
Carpenter after carpenter had tried to find a way to solve the problem without success. They said it couldn’t be done.
A few weeks before Christmas of 1878 a carpenter arrived, his burro laden with wood. He said he had come to build a staircase and it would be done by Christmas.
On Christmas Eve the sisters entered the chapel and before their eyes was a beautiful spiral staircase gracefully winding upward to the choir loft. It had 33 steps, one for each year in the life of Our Lord. It had no nails, just wooden pegs. The spiral made two complete 360 degree turns with no central support. It seemed to float on air.
This staircase stands today, just as it was on that Christmas Eve in 1878. Architects still shake their heads and say, “Impossible.”
The sisters never did find out who this mysterious carpenter was. He left without payment. A young girl who lived with the sisters said that she had talked to him, and his name was José – Spanish for “Joseph”.
