Ken O’Riordan to commission an article on the forthcoming Congress for his Manchester Parish Annual. As we bring you his wonderful Congress reflection, we also ask your prayers for Fr. A Symbol of Early Irish Christianity
The Bell is one of the great symbols of early Irish Christianity – it marks the change between the old Celtic Warrior world of the Druids, the heroes of old and the new vision brought by the prophet Patrick. Patrick’s Bell sounded out, inviting people to follow the voice of Christ rather than the voice of the more ancient, powerful and in many ways fascinating and seductively beautiful voice of the Celtic world of his day. His invitation, partially accepted, was also resisted and in many ways continues to be resisted. In the ancient poetry the image was offered of the struggle between the Blackbird and the Bell. The blackbird, very beautiful with a lovely song, yet savage – red in tooth and claw in contrast with the call to deep peace and reconciliation coming from the Bell. The tension and the invitation to reject the Bell is captured in the poem “Beautiful – the Blackbird of Doire an Chairn”. Below are the first and last verse of the poem.

Nowhere on earth have I heard
A lovelier music than yours
There as you guard your nest.
When Fionn and the Fianna lived
They loved the hills, not hermit-cells.
Blackbird speech is what they loved
Not the sound, unlovely, of your bells.
Here are the words of some young people from the Dingle Peninsula reflecting on the sound of the Bell: –
“The Bell isn’t just any bell. The bell is calling everyone and inviting people to Mass. My school went to see the Bell and it reminded everyone about the importance of our Faith. The Bell has travelled all over Ireland.”
“The Eucharistic Congress Bell is part of our history and our religion. The Bell means to listen to God. The Bell is a key symbol of the 50th International Eucharistic Congress. Saint Patrick used a bell to get people to listen to him about the word of God. It’s origins are the Dominican Convent of Portstewart, Co. Down.”
“On Tuesday my school went to see the Bell at twelve o’clock near the pier. Fr. Bernard was an organiser. It is a religious bell that gathers everyone together and to remind us how important going to Mass is and how important God is in our lives.”
“St. Patrick went around telling people about God. I think the Bell is a good way to call people back to pray. Many people have left praying and do not do it anymore. This is what I think the Bell means.”
“This is what the Bell means to me: It calls back the people to the Church that said they were too busy with money. I think it will bring a new renewal.”

Our Parish Pastoral Council invites you all to Séipéal Naomh Muire on Saturday September 8th next for a Farewell to Fr. Bernard with Aifreann at 8.00pm followed by Oíche Cheiliúradh in Pobalscoil Corca Dhuibhne where a presentation will be made. Envelopes will be distributed to homes in the Parish over the next few weeks for those of you who wish to be associated with our Parish Farewell to Fr. Bernard as he moves to St. John’s, Tralee.
Visiting or Retired Priests’ Dinner
Bishop Liam Ó Murchú extends an invitation to the Annual Dinner for Priests who are at home from abroad which will be held in the Parish Centre, Church of the Resurrection, Park Road, Killarney on August 7th at 6.30pm.
