Bliain an Chreidimh – Our Patron Saints
Laochra an Chreidimh No.24.
St. Valentine. I chose Saint Valentine for my confirmation name because I read a story about Saint Valentine and how he was imprisoned and later sentenced to death by Claudius II the emperor of Rome. Saint Valentine was imprisoned by Claudius II because Saint Valentine did not agree with the Emperor’s law. Claudius did not have a big enough army but thought of an awful law as a solution to his problem. He decided to cancel all marriages and no one in all of Rome could get married. Claudius thought that if the men couldn’t get married the men would ignore the women and want to be soldiers. Valentine, who was a priest, believed that people needed to get married. So he secretly and illegally married couples anyway. He performed the weddings in secret places, so the Roman soldiers would not find out. But one day the Roman soldiers caught Valentine and took him to the Emperor’s palace. Claudius thought that Valentine was a well spoken man and encouraged him to stop being a Christian and become a loyal Roman instead. But Valentine told him he will stick to his own beliefs so he was put in jail. While Saint Valentine was imprisoned he changed forty-six members of a guard’s family to Christianity. When Claudius discovered this he sentenced Saint Valentine to death. I think that Saint Valentine was very brave and risked his life to save the sanctity of marriage so that is why I want Valentine to be my Confirmation name. (Neesan – Bunscoil Iognáid Rís)
Trócaire and Dues Envelopes
The Spring and Easter Dues Envelopes and Trócaire Boxes are being distributed to each house in the Parish. Buíochas to the Teagmhálaí who distribute them on behalf of the Parish. Spare envelopes and Trócaire Boxes are available at the back of the three Parish Churches.
This year’s Trócaire appeal is focused on an isolated community in rural India. The community in Odisha, in the east of India live in poverty, but with Trócaire’s help, and our partners, the community is being built up and empowered to work together towards a brighter future.
Trócaire invites you to be in solidarity with this community this Lent; praying for them and supporting them, in whatever way you can.
Vocations
The best way to break the spell of the world’s tempting voices is not to shut out the music by blocking our ears, but to have our hearts filled with the sweeter music of the joy of Christ.

Prayer For Pope Benedict XVI
O God, who in your providential design willed that your Church be built upon blessed Peter, whom you set over the other Apostles, look with favour, we pray on Benedict XVI our Pope as he announces his resignation and grant that he, whom you have made Peter’s successor may be for your people a visible source and foundation of unity in faith and of communion.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen
“Is tú Peadar agus is ar an gcarraig seo a thógfaidh mé m’eaglais, agus ní bhuafaidh geataí ifrinn uirthi. Agus tabharfaidh mé duit eochracha ríocht na bhflaitheas.” Matha: 16:18-19.
