2025, A Jubilee Year in the Church

A Jubilee Year is held every twenty-five years. Pope Francis will officially open the year by opening a Holy Door in St Peter’s Basilica, Rome on Christmas Eve.

The beginning will be celebrated worldwide on the following Sunday, 29th December Feast Day of the Holy Family in every diocese worldwide, and thus at all our Masses that weekend. Pope Francis has chosen the Jubilee theme “Pilgrims of Hope”. We are asked to treat the year ahead as a year-long pilgrimage seeking together to become more aware that truly Jesus Christ Our Saviour is with us each day, – as our help, strength and guide. When we speak of ‘Hope’ we mean ‘Hope in Jesus Christ’, Hope in our God, Father, Son and Spirit.

Thought for the day: Even in its resolutely secular form, the Christmas celebration has positive sides to it. People do try very hard to get together with close family and friends. It might help to react in advance on this seasonal intensity of encounter. What do I hope for? What do I bring? How can I/we be so that we are not simply in the same physical space but truly meet each other and are the better for it? There should be some leap of joy, so that at the end of the festivities, we are glad we made the effort. Prayer: God of all loving, bless all our encounters this Christmas. Help us to be both kind and joyful, so that all whom we meet will be the better for it. Inspire us to know when a word of witness will lift the celebration and enable family and friends to get to the heart of it all.

May God bless each one of us this Christmas. May all darkness in our lives

be removed by the light of Christ.

May our hearts be filled with the Joy of Christ’s birth. Nollaig Shona
