Week of Prayer for Christian Unity
(Jan 18th – 25th 2011)

Dear Brothers and Sisters,
During this Week of Prayer for Christian Unity, all the Lord’s followers are asked to implore the gift of full communion. This year’s theme – “They devoted themselves to the Apostles’ teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers” (Acts 2:42) – invites us to reflect on four pillars of unity found in the life of the early Church. The first is fidelity to the Gospel of Jesus Christ proclaimed by the Apostles. The second is fraternal communion, a contemporary expression of which is seen in the growing ecumenical friendship among Christians. The third is the breaking of the bread; although the inability of separated Christians to share the same Eucharistic table is a reminder that we are still far from the unity which Christ wills for his disciples, it is also an incentive to greater efforts to remove every obstacle to that unity. Finally, prayer itself helps us realize that we are children of the one heavenly Father, called to forgiveness and reconciliation. During this Week, let us pray that all Christians will grow in fidelity to the Gospel, in fraternal unity and in missionary zeal, in order to draw all men and women into the saving unity of Christ’s Church.

– Pope Benedict XVI  (19/01/2011)

A Dhia,
deonaigh dom an suaimhneas
chun glacadh le rudaí

misneach chun rudaí a athrú nuair is féidir,
agus gaois chun an difríocht a aithint.

Liturgical Year A – The Gospel of Matthew

This year, the Sunday readings for Ordinary Time will mainly be taken from the Gospel according to St Matthew.  Tradition attributes this Gospel to the tax collector Matthew and the 2nd Century historian Papias suggests that the ‘sayings of Jesus’ as recorded in Hebrew by Matthew were behind the Greek text of the Gospel which survives to this day. In any event, it seems that this Gospel was written particularly for Christians of Jewish origin because of the great emphasis it puts on how Christ fulfils the prophesies and expectations expressed in the Jewish scriptures.  Jesus is the promised “Son of David” as well as being the Son of God, and we are reminded of how God prepared the way for the coming of His Son in a particular way through the history of the Jewish people.  Matthew is also known as the Teacher’s Gospel because of the great emphasis put on the preaching and teaching of Christ.  The teaching of Christ about His Kingdom is gathered together in an especially memorable way in this Gospel.  Finally, the Gospel of Matthew places great emphasis on the ekklesia or Church – the fact that we are called together as a community to follow the teachings of Christ.

Those interested in learning more about the Gospel of Matthew are invited to the following event which is organised as part of the Diocese of Kerry’s preparation for the International Eucharistic Congress 2012.
