Ár gCóineartú

We welcome our 6th Class students and their families to our Parish Confirmation Programme.  This Sunday we invite candidates and their families to make a serious commitment to prepare for this Sacrament.  As a parish we all pledge our support for these young people during their period of preparation and beyond.

What is Confirmation?

As we begin to prepare for Confirmation, it is important that we understand clearly what confirmation is.  Confirmation is the sacrament that builds on and perfects our baptism.  It binds us more closely to the Church and gives us the special strength of the Holy Spirit.  This special gift of the Holy Spirit is given to us so that we might be witnesses to Christ and His gospel.  We should be prepared to learn more about Jesus Christ and His teachings and bear witness to Him in word and deed.

Each of the seven sacraments is an effective sign of God’s grace – in other words, they are signs and they deliver the particular help of God that they symbolise. In Confirmation the Bishop uses the signs of laying-on hands and anointing with Chrism to pass on the gift of the Holy Spirit.  The laying-on of hands is the oldest part of the Confirmation ceremony.  This is an ancient sign of blessing and of passing on a special spiritual gift.  Later, anointing with Chrism (a blessed mixture of oil and balsam) became part of the ceremony to show the meaning of the sacrament more clearly. The words ‘Christ’ and ‘Chrism’ are related to the Greek word for ‘anointing’. Jesus is called the Christ because He was ‘anointed’ with the Holy Spirit. In the Bible, anointing with oil is a sign of joy, cleansing, preparation for a task and healing.  The fragrant smell of Chrism is a reminder that we should bring the ‘aroma of Christ’ with us.

All sacraments are founded on the actions and promises of Jesus Christ Himself.  There are many examples in the Gospels and the Acts of the Apostles of Jesus promising his followers the gift of the Holy Spirit to be a helper and a guide as they bear witness to Him in the World.  For example, we read in Acts 1:4-8 that the Risen Christ promised:-

You shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; and you shall be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and to the ends of the earth.”

The only reason that we have even heard of Jesus here in Ireland almost 2,000 years later is because of the power of that same Holy Spirit who has inspired generations of Christians to bear witness to the Lord.

Enquiring about the Catholic Faith – RCIA

The parishes of the Corca Dhuibhne Pastoral Area – Annascaul, Baile an Fheirtéaraigh, Castlegregory and Dingle recently launched their joint RCIA programme. The RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults) is the programme of preparation for preparing interested non-baptised adults and non-Catholic Christians for full membership of the Catholic Church. The RCIA is not simply a course of instruction or teaching, but aims to be a process of initiation gradually introducing interested enquirers to the example and teaching of Jesus Christ and the life, teaching and practices of the Catholic Church. To assist in this process, a small group of people – Sheila O’Donnell, Geraldine O’Mahony, Barbara Prendergast and Fr Jim Sheehy – has been preparing to offer this programme in our Pastoral Area. Their responsibility will be to help and guide those interested on the journey of enquiry. Details from Parish clergy.  Ráth Dé ar an obair.

Introducing the New Missal on Nov. 27th

Is the Catholic Church in Ireland alone in introducing this new Missal?

The Catholic Church in Ireland, along with Churches throughout the English-speaking world, is working towards introducing the new edition of the Roman Missal at this time. This new edition is the English translation of the Latin Missal that was issued by Pope John Paul II in 2002. Since 2002 the Church  in its many languages has engaged in the work of translating this Latin text through study, reflection and consultation. This work in English-speaking countries, the new Missal will come into use during autumn 2011.

What differences can we expect at Mass from September 2011?

From September, congregations will begin to pray the new translations of the people’s prayers at Mass. These new texts will be on missalettes and on specially produced ‘congregational cards’ and will assist us in becoming more familiar with the new edition. In some places people will, by then, already be familiar with this congregational card through using it as weekday Mass or at parish meetings.              (to be continued)
