Guí an Phobail
Priest: Lord Jesus, you are the source and lover of life. For Pope Francis, for Bishop Liam, in thanksgiving for his leadership of the diocese and our Bishop-Elect Raymond that the Lord may guide him in his ministry among us. Lord, hear us.
1. We ask the Lord of the Harvest to give us favourable weather for all our farmers.
2. Help us to see in each child the marvellous work of our Creator. Open our hearts to welcome every child as a unique and wonderful gift.
3. Guide the work of doctors, nurses and midwives. May the life of a mother and her baby in the womb be equally cherished and respected.
4. Help those who make our laws to uphold the uniqueness and sacredness of every human life, from the first moment of conception to natural death.
5. Those who trusted in the Lord now sleep in the Lord. Give refreshment, rest and peace to all whose faith is known to you alone.
Bliain an Chreidimh – Our Patron Saints Laochra an Chreidimh No.49.
St. Laura was a Spanish Christian who lived in Muslim Spain during the 9th century. She was born in Cordoba and became a nun at Cuteclara after her husband died, eventually rising to become an abbess. She was martyred by Muslims who took her captive and scalded her to death by putting her in a vat of boiling lead. She died in 864. Her feast day is on the 19th of October. I chose the name Laura because I liked the way she followed Jesus as well as that my little cousin’s name is Laura and she is special to me.

(Dingle: Canon Jack McKenna)
The Classical Revival style of architecture is most frequently seen in representations of the simple Greek stele, a triangular-topped form, sometimes with sides sloping slightly towards the top. An example of this style, “a simple one being a possibly reworked cross-slab at Fionn Trá, where the cross has been placed in a lozenge and ‘R.I.P.’ has been irregularly cut above probably in the nineteenth or twentieth century, given the letter styles. (Page 33)
Uninscribed stones – the graves of the common people were marked by small uninscribed stones placed at the head, and sometimes also at the foot, of the grave. Occasionally simple initials or a cross have been carved on the stones and examples can be seen in Fionn Trá. (Page 47)

Diocesan Collection for the Sick and Retired Priests
A Phobal Dé, I wish to begin with a sincere word of thanks to all the people of the Diocese for their continuing support over many years for the sick and retired priests of the Diocese.
A special word of thanks to a number of people in each parish who contributed monthly by standing order to the fund and I stress that their support is both invaluable and appreciated.
Looking at the future it is a very challenging task for the Diocese as the numbers of priests requiring full time nursing care is set to increase with the wonders of modern medicine we all hope to live longer and nursing care costs have increased sharply in recent years.
As an example, I wish to share some facts with you. In 2005 we had 6 priests in full time nursing care at a cost of €180,000 p.a.
In 2012 we had 7 priests in full time nursing care at a cost of €335,000 p.a. showing that costs almost doubled in 7 years.
I am sure you would agree with me that we owe a huge debt of gratitude to our sick and retired priests who served our spiritual needs, week by week, all over the Diocese during their 50 years of ministry since ordination. They have shared both our joy and sadness within family occasions during our lives.
Saturday/Sunday is the occasion of our Annual Collection throughout the Diocese for sick and retired priests. Whilst acknowledging the present economic environment we all face, I appeal to you to please make whatever financial contribution may be possible for you towards our collection this Sunday.
May the Lord reward your goodness and generosity always. In Christ, Dr. Liam Ó Murchú.
