Year of Faith
October 11th 2012 – November 24th 2013
The Year of Faith begins October 11, 2012. It is a timely and much-needed call from the Holy Father for a renewed dedication to the Faith.
For the next 12 months we plan to bring you a profile of a Faith Hero/Heroine. We will invite all our Confirmation candidates to write a Faith profile of their chosen Confirmation Patron Saint for publication.
Faith Heroes and Heroines
Hugh O’Flaherty was immortalised in the Gregory Peck film “The Scarlet and the Black” in 1983. Fr. O’Flaherty’s life story has inspired many people especially his intrepid role during the German occupation of Rome (1942 – 1944) in establishing and maintaining escape routes and safe houses for 6,500 on the run Allied troops, Jews and many others. On this Day for Life celebration leading into the Year of Faith we note the huge risks Monsignor Hugh took to protect all who needed sanctuary during World War II and this included the retreating Germans following the liberation of Rome in early June 1944. His arch enemy Herbert Kappler, Head of the Gestapo in Rome was imprisoned. For years afterwards the Monsignor visited him in jail on a monthly basis and helped him in his decision to become a Roman Catholic while serving his life sentence.
He is author of “O, Roma Felix,” a pilgrim visitors’ guide to the Eternal City. Eamon Andrews screened a special “This is Your Life” in 1963 watched by 8 million viewers enthralled by the courage and Christian fortitude of this Kerry Faith hero.
“As a Catholic priest he was preaching the world of God and it was his duty to practise it. The rest of us, however, must conclude that he fulfilled his mission with extraordinary conviction, ingenuity, courage and compassion for his fellow man. Indeed this was a great and good man.”
(Extract from “The Wartime Exploits of Monsignor Hugh O’Flaherty”: Brian Fleming)

It is the one day set aside each year for Catholics worldwide to recommit themselves to the Church’s missionary activity through prayer and sacrifice. The Mission Sunday collection supports Young Churches and missionaries in meeting the spiritual and material needs of men, women and children in poorer countries overseas.
Last year the people of Ireland sent 2 million Euro to support this Gospel task.

Helena Connolly
Helena Connolly is originally from Co Fermanagh, but has been living in Co Kerry for the past six years. She moved to Killarney in 2006 to play music with popular Kerry band Onóra, releasing an album in 2008 entitled Future in the Past. Her new solo album The Reason Why is very much back to her roots, with her self-penned songs rooted in folk/country/roots music, drawing automatic comparisons to Emmylou Harris and Mary Black. Her unique blend of acoustic folk and country, make her an exciting new artist on the Irish music scene. Her songs are thoughtful and heartfelt musings on life that have a positivity and sincerity sometimes lacking in many modern artists. Helena comes with impressive credentials having studied music at Queen’s University Belfast and University of Edinburgh, now working as a lay Pastoral Worker and Director of Music in Killarney Parish. The Reason Why is a must have album for all music fans this year… It’s what the soul of music should be – beautiful, honest and pure. She plays Mc Carthy’s Dingle October 12th 9pm. Admission €5 www.helenaconnolly.com
