Thought for the day: The image of the Good Shepherd is profoundly reassuring. We hear it today in John’s gospel and elsewhere in the Bible. It evokes a tremendous feeling of being cared for, the consolation of faith. Even in these difficult days, we need such reassurance. At the same time, the metaphor is used in a dissonant way: no regular shepherd, however caring, gives his life for his sheep! Cosy familiarity can dull the sense of shock: what is going on here? The gentle pastoral language suddenly gives way to sacrifice, as the shepherd becomes the lamb of God. Prayer: Jesus our shepherd, we know your care for us was costly as you laid down your life and took it up again. Help us to know again “the great events that gave us new life” in you, that we may hear you and follow you in all we do.

Pope Francis on X: Jesus has triumphed over evil. He turned His cross into the bridge to the resurrection. Raise your hands to Him daily to praise and bless Him. Tell Him the hopes of your heart and share with Him your deepest secrets. God loves this kind of living, concrete, and heartfelt prayer.

This Sunday is Good Shepherd Sunday, we encourage you to pray for Vocations.

Prayer for Vocations

Loving and Generous God, it is You who call us by name and ask us to follow you.

Help us to grow in the Love and service of our Church as we experience it today.

Give us the energy and courage of Your Spirit to shape its future. Grant us faith filled leaders who will embrace Christ’s Mission of love and justice. Bless the Church by raising up dedicated and generous leaders from our families and friends who will serve Your people as Sisters, Priests, Brothers, Permanent Deacons and Lay Ministers. Inspire us to know You better and open our hearts to hear Your call. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.
