Thought for the day: The famous reflection of Teilhard de Chardin suggests itself: The day will come when, after harnessing the ether, the winds, the tides, gravitation, we shall harness for God the energies of love. And, on that day, for the second time in the history of the world, man will have discovered fire. The uncertainties of today are evident, political, economic and environmental. What can we as people of faith contribute? Again, in the words of Teilhard, “there is something wonderful afoot in the universe.” The eyes of faith see the deeper pattern. Prayer: God of the cosmos, you hold everything in being. God of love, you love the human race; God of our hearts, helps us to see your handiwork not only in the universe, but in the everyday events of our lives. Amen.

St John Henry Newman, one of the most influential English theologians of the 19th century, is to be made a Doctor of the Church by Pope Leo XIV. Newman chose as his motto the phrase Cor ad cor loquitur – “Heart speaks to heart” – because he realised that his deepest encounters came from prayerful dialogue, heart to heart, with Christ in the Eucharist.  Bishop of Killaloe Fintan Monahan said that he was “overjoyed” at the news. In Rome this week along with a group of Irish bishops, clergy and 600 young adult pilgrims from across the island, as part of the Jubilee global gathering of one million people to celebrate the 2025 Year of Hope, he said, “Saint John Henry Newman was steeped in the Scriptures and the writings of the early Church Fathers.  Apart from his saintly qualities he became famous for his theological work on the development of doctrine, the importance of conscience, the purpose of education, the role of the laity and an analysis of faith and reason.

“Many regard him as the father the ideas of Vatican II and the Synodal process.  He was certainly way ahead of his time.  His devotional work, prayers, hymns and profound poetry helped to bring many people closer in their relationship with God.” In 2019 Bishop Monahan published A Perfect Peace, Newman, Saint for Our Time.

Prayer of Blessed Henry Newman:

O Lord, support us all day long, until the shadows lengthen, and the evening comes, and the busy world is hushed, and the fever of life is over, and our work is done. Then in your mercy, grant us a safe lodging and a holy rest, and peace at last.

Pope Leo XIV on X: Let us continue to pray for an end to all wars. The 80th anniversary of the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki has reawakened throughout the world a rightful rejection of war as a means of resolving conflicts. May those who make decisions always bear in mind that they are responsible for the consequences of their choices on all peoples. May they not ignore the needs of the weakest, and the universal desire for peace
