Fómhar na Farraige 2014
A special céad míle fáilte to all who join us for our 11.30am celebration of Fómhar na Farraige or The Harvest of the Sea. We extend our thanks to those who help organise this annual liturgy, those who prepare and decorate the Church, those who supply the wonderful display of fish, all those who contribute items for the procession and for the decoration of the Church. Buíochas to all who play a special part in the Fishermen’s Mass as we offer our thanks to the Lord and ask His blessing on all whose livelihood depends on the sea.
Those who bring up the gifts place before us symbols of the great harvest of fish and other products which come from the sea, as well as items representing different aspects of sea-faring life and marine activities. Others present the bread and wine which become the Body and Blood of Christ. Our readers, those who read prayers of the faithful and the reflection – proclaim the life-giving Word of the Lord.
Prayer of The Fisherman
Lord,
As we put out into the deep
We place ourselves into Your keep.

All that lies before us your grandeur
O blue-grey wave and water
Your sacred work of art.

Every fish that swims
Every lurking shell
Every coral of beauty
Beneath the surf and swell
Bears the imprint of Your name.

May this boat
Rise with the ebb and flow of each tide
And glide to the rhythm of Your heart
May no storm separate us from sheltering coves
May we never lose hope in Your eternal presence.

Calm the seas with Your gentle breeze
May dolphins dance and seagulls swoop
To a rich harvest.

May we see again the miracle of full nets
As we too cast out to starboard
As once You told Your fishermen.

May the night come calmly
Guiding us to a safe harbour
Where every lighthouse reaches the hidden depths of Your presence
Lighting the darkness of distant lives.

Lord take to Your Self
All who lie in the sleep of the sea
All souls lost in service
May love still shed a tear.

And when the sun is setting in gold across the bay
In You we find our anchor in You we rest and pray.

Come walk across the water
Come lead us through the dark
O fisherman of Galilee
Come be our morning star. (Fr. Liam Lawton)

Our Cemetery Masses – Machnamh
Christian Death
We do not like to think about death. There is much in our culture that distracts us from reflection about our final destiny. We are encouraged to think only about the present moment and to fulfil today’s needs. But the Christian embraces the total reality of life and God’s call to the fullness of life after death. Thus, for example, Christians assist those whose earthly journey is coming to an end. ‘The dying should be given attention and care to help them live their last moments in dignity and peace. They will be helped by the prayer of their relatives, who must see to it that the sick receive at the proper time the sacraments that prepare them to meet the living God’ (CCC, no. 2299).
Not only do we care for the dying to help them pass their final moments in dignity and peace, but we also maintain reverence for their bodies once they are deceased. ‘The bodies of the dead must be treated with respect and charity, in faith and in the hope of the Resurrection. The burial of the dead is a corporal work of mercy [cf. Tob. 1:16-18]; it honours the children of God, who are temples of the Holy Spirit’ (CCC, no. 2300). The rituals accompanying respect for the dead include the funeral vigil (wake), the funeral itself, and the burial of the body or the cremated remains of the deceased at the cemetery. Participation in these rites enables friends and others to demonstrate reverence for the deceased, to pray together for the eternal repose of the deceased and to give the family of the deceased prayerful support.
