Radharc na Tríonóide – Cill Mhairéad

“Radharc na Tríonóide ag cácha a codlaíonn sa Reilig seo”. Nochtadh 2 Samhain 1998. This is the tribute engraved on the beautiful monument at Cill Mhairéad.

“Above Goat Street, on the slope of Cnoc an Chairn, stands Dingle hospital, site of an earlier workhouse . . .  To the north of the hospital is the old graveyard of Cill Mhairéad, where those who died in the workhouse were buried. In four years of the Famine some 6000 people passed through Dingle workhouse, many dying there and being buried here on the hillside. As is clear from the Minutes of the Poor Law Guardians, so overwhelming was the task of attempting to provide relief that records could not be adequately kept, and local historians can only guess at the numbers who died and were buried in Cill Mhairéad on the slopes of Cnoc an Chairn.”

(The Dingle Peninsula, 2000: Steve MacDonogh)

“Starvation … fever and dysentery are doing their work here. Six persons died in one lane in this town [Dingle] in one day. The dead are now buried without coffins. Whole villages to the west are in fever. It is almost deplorable to hear the children crying at every corner of hunger … The people are dying particularly to the west of Dingle by wholesale of starvation, fever and dysentery. Men who come home from the [public] work die almost and suddenly; and are often left three or four days waiting to see if their friends could scrape together the price of a coffin, and sometimes in vain.”

(Kerry Eve Post. 30/1/1847. The Great Famine. MA Thesis, 2005. Shane G. Lehane M.A.:)

The Holy Stone lies on the side of the street at the junction of Main Street and Chapel Lane. It is true to say that it has fascinated many generations of Dingle people and has proved an object of curiosity for many a tourist. It is known in both the Irish and English languages as the Holy Stone. An Chloch Bheannaithe or similar Irish version has never been applied to it. An old Irish quatrain dating from the beginning of the nineteenth century mentions this celebrated stone:

Dé Domhnaigh, Dé Domhnaigh, ‘sea deineadh díomsa creach,

Mar pósadh mo stórach gan orlach dem’ chead.

Dá mbeidhfá suite i gcóistín agus mise le do ais,

Nach momharach do sheolfhimís an Holy Stone amach.

Chapel Lane: Off Goat Street, Dingle Parish Church was sited here from 1702 until 1812.

(Dingle, 1993: Canon Jackie McKenna)
