Bliain an Chreidimh – Our Patron Saints
Laochra an Chreidimh No.26.
Naomh Kieran was born in Connacht in Ireland. He was the son of a carpenter. He studied at St. Finnian’s school in Clonard and he was considered the best monk at Clonard. Kieran spent seven years at Inishmore with Saint Enda and then went to a monastery in the center of Ireland called Isel. He was forced to leave by the monks because of what they called his excessive charity. He spent some time on Inis Aingin and later with eight companions, migrated to a spot on the bank of the Shannon river in Offaly, where he built a monastery that became the famous Clonmacnois, renowned for centuries as the great center of Irish learning and was its Abbot. Many extravagant miracles and tales tell of Kieran, who is one of the twelve apostles of Ireland. Many manuscripts and artefacts remain today including high crosses and grave slabs, still gracing the site. Sadly, St. Kieran did not survive to see Clonmacnoise become so important as he died seven months after his work began.
St. Kieran loved animals and it is said that a fox had been his companion in childhood. It is also said he used to rest his book on the antlers of a tame deer. We celebrate his feast day on March 5th each year.
I chose the name Kieran because it is in both sides of my family. I like it because it is a strong name and it is an Irish Saint’s name. In Irish it translates as Naomh Ciarán.

Prayer for a New Pope
A Dhia, a thréadaí shíoraí, bíonn do thréad á stiúradh agus á chumhdach i gcónaí agat faoi do scáth. Tabhair, as ucht do chineáltais, aoire do d’Eaglais a thaitneoidh leat de bharr a naofachta, agus a dhéanfaidh ár leas-na go dílis, le togha cúraim.

O God, eternal shepherd, who govern your flock with unfailing care, grant in your boundless fatherly love a pastor for your Church who will please you by his holiness and to us show watchful care.
Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.
Prayer for Pope Benedict XVI
We pray for Pope Benedict XVI in thanksgiving for his service to the Church. May his retirement be a time of great peace and fulfilment, as he continues his ministry of prayer for the Church. Lord, hear us.
NB: Read Farewell Holy Father in this week’s Irish Catholic, which is available in the Churches.
The Way of the Cross
An Opening Prayer
God, our heavenly Father, we raise our minds and hearts to you in praise and thanksgiving. Though weak and sinful, we wish to follow your only Son, our Lord Jesus, on the way of the cross. May your Holy Spirit help us use our Savior’s strength effectively in our place in life.
We ask the special aid of our Blessed Lady, ever Virgin and Mother, in following Christ and in making His way of the Cross our way of life. Amen
1. Jesus is Condemned to death – Found guilty though innocent, unjustly judged, our Master accepted a perverse human verdict. He knew God has the last word. We, too, must imitate Christ, pray for the wicked, and leave the rest to God.
“And they all gave their verdict: he deserved to die.” Mk 14:64
2. Jesus Takes His Cross – All of us who follow Christ will have our own cross to bear. By imitating our Lord the cross we carry becomes a means of salvation and final victory both for ourselves and for others as well. “Pilate handed him over to be crucified.” Jn. 19:16
3. Jesus Falls the First Time – Even our blessed Lord staggered and fell under the weight He was bearing. He had no one to aid Him. Christ is with us when we stumble; He is eager to help us. Turn to Him now and ask His aid. “I looked: there was no one to help.” Is 63:4
4. Jesus Meets His Afflicted Mother – Our Lord gave His holy Mother a part in His suffering so she might fully share His victory and glory. Our Lord, Jesus, gives us this same chance to join Him in sorrow so we may share their joy. “Woman, this is your Son.” Jn 19:26
(To be contd)
