Patrún Naomh Caitlín – Samhain 25ú
The Firework Martyr
Early in the 4th century A.D. Catherine, a nobly-born and cultured young woman, was living in Alexandria, Egypt. Being a Christian, Catherine bravely travelled to Rome where Christianity was banned. It was her intention to try to meet the Roman Emperor, Maxentius, a pagan.
It was Catherine’s hope to try to persuade the Emperor to change his way of governing the country, stop the persecution of Christians and allow them to worship in their own churches. This was at great risk to her own life. The Emperor was outraged by her daring on hearing her proposals when she was finally allowed to meet him. He ordered her to be publicly whipped and thrown into prison.
On hearing of Catherine’s imprisonment the Empress, with a Roman general and several soldiers, went to the prison to plead with her to give up her Christian beliefs and to get her to beg forgiveness from the Emperor in order to save her life and avoid more torture.
Catherine refused and spoke firmly of her belief in God and that He would save her. She talked so convincingly about her strong faith she succeeded in converting the Empress, the general and the soldiers to Christianity, too.
The Emperor flew into a terrible rage, ordered the execution of the general and soldiers and the banishment of his wife, the Empress. But for Catherine he ordered she was put to death on the wheel.
This dreadful instrument was a large wheel with vicious short swordlike blades fitted on its outer surface. Catherine was bound to the wheel but before it could be moved to stab and kill her to the amazement of everyone there the wheel fell to pieces and her bonds dropped off. The Emperor not to be cheated of killing her angrily ordered her to be stabbed with a sword. Although it had been invented by the Chinese several thousands of years earlier, because of its shape the revolving, wheel-like firework emitting sparks as it turned became known as the Catherine Wheel.
After her death in 307AD her body was taken to Mount Sinai and buried, the site later became a shrine and is now an Orthodox Monastery. In 313 Emperor Constantine accepted Christianity as the religion for the Roman Empire.
She became the patron saint of wheelwrights, carpenters, lace-makers, spinners, ropemakers and young women with her feastday on Nov 25th.
