The Pope’s Encyclical on the Environment Laudato Si’ – Praised Be
This is the first time a pope has devoted one entirely to environmental issues. The pontiff unambiguously accepts the scientific consensus that changes in the climate are largely man-made, and also laments a loss of biodiversity and growing scarcities of safe water.
Francis is especially strong on the link between environmental problems and poverty, arguing that developing nations will bear the brunt of today’s ecological crisis and that poor people are ill-equipped to adapt to a changing climate. It’s essential, he insists, “to hear both the cry of the earth and the cry of the poor.”
Fr. Donal Dorr, will be speaking on the Pope’s Encyclical in Killarney on the evening of 28th September. Details of this event will follow later.
Laochra an Chreidimh II – Patrons
Naomh Eoin Baiste: Son of Zachary, priest of the Temple in Jerusalem, and Elizabeth, a kinswoman of Mary who visited her, he was probably born at Ain-Karim southwest of Jerusalem after the angel Gabriel had told Zachary that his wife would bear a child even though she was an old woman. He lived as a hermit in the desert of Judea until about 27A.D., when he was thirty, he began to preach on the banks of the Jordan against the evils of the times and called all to penance and baptism “for the kingdom of heaven is close at hand.” He attracted large crowds, and when Christ came to him John recognized his as the Messiah and baptized him, saying, “It is I who need baptism from you” (Mt. 3:14). When Christ left to preach in Galilee, John continued preaching in the Jordan Valley. Fearful of his great power with the people, Herod had him arrested and imprisoned at Machaerus Fortress on the Dead Sea when John denounced his adulterous and incestuous marriage with Herodias, wife of his half brother Philip. John was beheaded at the request of Salome, daughter of Herodias, who asked for his head at the instigation of her mother. John inspired many of his followers to follow Christ when he designated him “the lamb of God,” among them Andrew and John, who came to know Christ through John’s preaching. John is presented in the New Testament as the last of the Old Testament prophets and the precursor of the Messiah. His feast day is June 24th and his beheading is marked on August 29th the feast of The Passion of St. John the Baptist.

Ag an bPósadh Bhí I gCána
Ag an bpósadh bhí i gCána bhí Rí na ngrás ann i bpearsain, É féin is Muire máthair, is nárbh álainn í an bhainis. Bhí cuideacht’ os cionn cláir ann, agus fíon orthu in easnamh, ‘S an t-uisce bhí sna hárthaigh nárbh álainn é ‘bhlaiseadh.
Is ró-bhreá an stór tá ag Rí na glóire dúinn i dtaisce,
A chuid fola agus feola mar lón do na peacaigh.
Ná cuirigí bhur ndóchas in ór buí nó i rachmas
Mar is bréagán mar cheo é, seachas glóire na bhflaitheas.
