Vital Emigrant Services
www.usairish.org The site is the website of the Irish chaplaincies, their staff and volunteers in the US, providing help and support for both legal and the undocumented Irish immigrants. As their site states: ‘It is the Christian imperative of caring for those who move far from the ancestral home, and welcoming the stranger as one would welcome Christ, once an exile himself.’ The site is very well-structured, providing links to the various community service projects and pastoral care centres run across the fifty states. It also offers Irish links as well as a delightfully laid out segment on Irish prayers and hymns. A very helpful section on getting legal and Church documents in both Ireland and the US.
www.irishchaplaincy.org.uk This website is the service for the Irish Chaplaincy in the United Kingdom, one of the oldest Irish charities in the UK, with a focus on social justice for Irish emigrants. The mission of the group is principally to reach out to the most vulnerable of Irish emigrants, such as the Irish travellers, prisoners and the elderly who are in the UK. The website details the enormous amount of work the charity does, including visiting prisoners and the elderly in their homes. The website also has resources on Iris prayers, information on those who would like to volunteer their services or who wish to donate to the charity.
www.diaspora.ie Helps to foster a sense of connectivity for those who are abroad.
www.emigrants.ie brings global news to the Irish emigrant community and provides an email newsletter service so that those far from home can keep up to date with what is happening in Ireland.
www.irishabroad.com has a network of over 240,000 Irish emigrants and their descendents and provides a space for social networking and finding other Irish people in your area.
Guí an Phobail
· During this Eucharist Congress year, may we as a Nation cry out for a deep Faith to share both at home and abroad. Lord, hear us.
· We pray especially for the people who are working in the Irish Centres and Communities throughout the world. Lord, hear us.
· We pray that our recent emigrants will remain true to their Christian values. Lord, hear us.
· We give thanks for the great gifts that our forebears brought to the new lands, and may their efforts influence and inspire our emigrants today. Lord, hear us.
· May our emigrants grow to love their new countries like St. Patrick did in Ireland. Lord, hear us.
