Trócaire Appeal for Somalia, Ethiopia & Kenya

Dear Canon Ó Luanaigh SP VF,

I write following the decision by Bishop Murphy to hold a collection in churches on the weekend of 23rd and 24th July to respond to the plight of millions suffering from the devastating effects of drought in East Africa.

In Somalia, Ethiopia and Kenya, famine is emerging because of the failure of the seasonal rains over the last two years. Now more than 12 million people are at serious risk, over half of them children. All the classic indications of famine are starkly visible: people moving from their homes, the emergence of serious levels of malnutrition, now estimated at five times the emergency threshold, and the sale and death of livestock, the most important asset for these communities. About 90% of livestock are currently at risk.

In fact the situation is steadily worsening. The town of Dollow on the Somali / Ethiopian border is a case in point. There are now 1,700 Somalis crossing into Ethiopia on a daily basis. Trócaire runs a health centre for mothers and their children in the town which provides outpatient care, antenatal and delivery care, child screening, vaccination services and additional outreach programmes to five outlying villages. Trócaire also runs an outpatient therapeutic feeding programme for severely malnourished children.

On behalf of the people of East Africa calling out to us in their distress for assistance, we thank you most sincerely for your ongoing support of Trócaire’s work.

Justin Kilcullen, Director.

PARISH FINANCE COMMITTEE

Dear Parishioners,

As it is now possible for our parish to claim back tax paid on charitable donations, our Parish Finance Committee would be most grateful to the eligible households who received the Taxback forms during the week, if they could return them as soon as is convenient in the envelopes provided. If you have contributed €250 or more last year, (2010) and are a PAYE worker, we can claim back the tax paid on the amount you donated. All you have to do is complete and return the form which you will receive. Completing the form will cost you nothing, but will greatly benefit the parish as you saw in our published financial accounts for 2010, when we acknowledged the sum of €16,630.53 received as Tax Rebate from the Revenue.

Go méadaí Dia bhúr stór.

Churchgate Collections

Dingle Parish Pastoral Council reminds all holders of Garda permits for Churchgate Collections to please carefully observe the law involved and note that there are 21 conditions attached to all Garda permits. While the community spirit and selfless generosity of all volunteers is to be lauded, it is advised that they retain a copy or photocopy of the actual permit. On no account should such collections be taken up within church buildings. Therefore, as all Churchgate collections must enjoy Garda clearance, it is essential that State law be both respected and observed at all times.

The Book of Lismore – Oilithreacht

The Book of Lismore will be on public display Glucksman Gallery, University College Cork until October 30th 2011. One of its beautiful reflections includes the following: “Going on Pilgrimage without change of heart brings no reward from God, for it is by practising virtue and not mere motion of feet that we will be brought to Heaven”.

Truagh Mo Thuras Go Loch Dearg

A AonMhic Mhuire ler cumadh cách,

‘s do sheachain bás na dtrí ndealg,

le croidhe nach cruaidhe cloch,

truagh mo thuras go Loch Dearg.

Sole Son of Mary, Who madest all,

nor shrank from the death of the three nails,

with a heart harder than any stone

vain my visit to Loch Dearg.

(An Duanaire: Poems of the Dispossessed. Ó Tuama/Kinsella)

Ríocht Dé

546 Glaonn Íosa chun na Ríochta trí mheán a chuid parabal, atá ina gcomhartha sóirt dílis dá chuid teagaisc. Iontu sin, tugann sé cuireadh chuig bainis na Ríochta, ach éilíonn sé freisin bunrogha a dhéanamh: d’fhonn an Ríocht a ghnóthú, ní mór gach ní a thabhairt suas. Ní leor caint, ní foláir gníomh. Tá na parabail mar a bheadh scátháin ann den duine daonna. An nglacann sé an briathar mar a dhéanfadh ithir chrua nó mar thalamh fónta? Cad a dhéanann sé leis na tallainn a thugtar dó? Tá Íosa féin agus an Ríocht mar atá sí i láthair ar talamh ar fáil i modh rúin i gcroílár na bparabal.
