Fógraí Swimming lessons in Minard, starting Monday 28th June at 11:30a.m. South Africa Missionary Calling Saturday June 12th 2010 A Cháirde, Everything has been a culture shock and without a clear job description I was at sea. Kokstad is a town of three population groups. There are the whites, mainly living in the more prosperous houses with the servants’ quarters at the back and bars on the doors and windows. The whites predominantly own the businesses, the farms and the blacks work for them. The blacks are the sweepers, the maids and they are everywhere always, walking up the road, down the road, sitting on the corners, staring ahead and if I say hello they reply, Hello Ma’am, as if I am in some way their superior. Their language is Xsosa. The third group are the coloureds. These are mixed white (mainly Afrikaans) and black and their language is Afrikaans. The congregation who attend mass in the Cathedral in Kokstad, where the Bishop is Liam Slattery from Killenaule in Tipperary are mainly white and coloured and Indians. There are quite a few Indians here too by the way. They were mainly brought here as teachers. The schools in the town are Kokstad High, mainly for whites, Mount Currie for the blacks and coloureds and St Patrick’s which seems to be mixed. St Pat’s and Kokstad High are fee-paying and have normal numbers in a class and have good results. Mount Currie is not so good. They have up to a 100 in some classes and as you would expect poor results. I am living in the main street in a house which belongs to Friends of Ireland and I have been there alone since I arrived. There are bars on the doors and windows and it would be nice to have some company. Hopefully there will be more volunteers coming out in July. The schools I teach in are called farm schools. They are in remote areas outside the town. Kokstad is set in a large farming area. The farms are huge, over 1000 acres and the farm workers and their families live in clusters of huts around the farm. They are poor and get very little money for their work. Most of the farm schools were set up to cater for these children. They were mission schools with churches attached but now the government has taken them over. However they are grossly under funded and over -populated. There could be over 100 in a class. The schools don’t have many rooms but as Mr Sabu an Indian teacher the Bishop introduced me to says, things are improving slowly. Lots of these children don’t have textbooks and even if they do the language in them is difficult, so I am doing out study notes in simpler English and hoping that the teachers will encourage the use of these. Quite often the teachers don’t understand the English either. It is their second language but English is the language of the exams. I have given some of the money to the schools but the bulk is going to the Bishop Slattery’s charity which provides bursaries for promising students and helps the families also. That was the gist of Green party leader, John Gormley’s reaction to the intervention by the bishops last week in the debate over the Civil Partnership Bill. The Bishops issued a statement on the matter following their latest quarterly meeting in Maynooth. Interviewed about the matter on RTÉ the next day John Gormley declared that he was “taken aback”. He said he “thought we had left the era of Church interference behind us”. The Church, Mr. Gormley continued, “should concentrate its efforts on looking after the spiritual needs of its flock, and not intrude into temporal or State matters”. Basically, Mr. Gormley is trying to put the bishops, and by extension all religious believers, in a box. In stating that the Church should focus on the “spiritual needs of its flock” he could hardly have been more explicit. The fact, it is Mr. Gormley’s attitude that is deeply undemocratic because he would deny the Church the right to comment on public matters that is enjoyed even by the Vintners’ Federation of Ireland, or the Irish Farmers’ Association for that matter. When the IFA criticised aspects of the Civil Partnership Bill a few months ago no-one questioned its right to voice its opinion on the issue. In fact, its criticisms were listened to and the Bill was amended. It seems the IFA now has more influence over the State than the Catholic Church does. Catholics, and religious believers in general, should react strongly against what John Gormley is attempting because what he is attempting is nothing less than the privatisation of religion. His view of religious freedom is evidently extremely limited.
