Letter from Kokstad, South Africa Part II

I go to Franklin in KZN on Tuesdays. There are 600 learners in this school which goes from grade 7 to 12 and again conditions are bad with overcrowded classes, so again results are bad. Most of their learners travel from the township of Shayamoya, just outside Kokstad, 40k away. There is a sign at the gate forbidding guns and drugs. Franklin is a terribly deprived place. I have been told that about 20 years ago it was a thriving little town with a hotel and a bowling green and a Nestle factory and a railway. I have not been told but I suspect that the town was mainly whites at the time. Anyway, the factory closed as did the railway, gradually the people moved away and poor blacks moved in. They have turned the place into a shantytown. They have no jobs and the drink and drug problems are huge as is AIDs…. The Friends in Ireland Charity have bought the bowling green and run a creche and after-school facility there. The Irish Jesuit schools run a programme for their school leavers in that they take them to places in the Third World for 2 or 3 weeks and they do a specific project. They are called Slí Eile. Two years ago Slí Eile erected a building in part of the bowling green which now houses an AIDs/HIV clinic. It means that the poor people from Franklin do not have to travel the 40k to Kokstad for their retroviral drugs. It is hard to describe without seeing it the feeling of hopelessness you get in the little town of Franklin. The hotel has a broken door and windows. The houses are hovels. The priest in charge of the Slí Eile boys told me that he met with a crippled carpenter living in a hut in the shantytown. He had no way of making a living. The Priest bought him tools and wood and enough to set him up. However when the Slí Eile people had left the man’s neighbours beat him up badly and stole everything from him… (to be contd.)

Tomás and Bernard hope to visit all homes in Cluais, Log na gCapaill and Minard Thoir, Gleann na Minairde agus Minard Thiar this week in preparation for our Mission which will take place from Sun the 7th of Nov. to Friday 12th under the direction of the Redemptorist Team.

Please pray OUR MISSION PRAYER

Heavenly Father,

We ask you to bless us,

As we prepare for our Parish Mission in November.

Open our hearts to Your grace,

That we may be more faithful

In following Your way.

Bless all families in our parish

At home and afar,

Especially those families

That are experiencing difficulties.

Bless the old, the young, the lonely,

The poor, the sick, the unemployed,

Those in sorrow, those in despair,

Those who have lost their way.

May Your love be upon us, O Lord

As we place all our hope in you. Amen.

Abair PAIDIR D’ÁR MISEAN

A Athair neamhaí

Iarraimid ort sinn a bheannú

Agus sinn ag ullmhú do Mhisean an Pharóiste i Mí na Samhna.

Oscail ár gcroíthe dod ghrásta

Go mbeimid níos dílse ag leanúint do shlí.

Leag go fial do bheannacht ar na teaghlaigh inár bparóiste

Ar ár bpobal sa bhaile agus i gcéin,

Go h’áirithe na teaghlaigh sin atá i gcruachás.

Beannaigh idir óg agus críonna, uaigneach

Bocht, breoite, iad siúd atá in isle brí,

Iad siúd a chaill a slí

Go dtitfidh do ghrá orainn, a Thiarna

Agus sinn ag cur ár ndóchas i dtaisce ionat. Amen
