Dingle Races 2010

‘Tis the first week in August, now autumn draws near,

Through my years they are telling, of death I’ve no fear.

I’m heading back west, with old neighbours to mingle,

And to greet long lost friends at the Races of Dingle.

You’ll meet film stars, hucksters, purveyors of tall tales,

From Boston, Buncrana, from England and Wales,

With sporran and kilt a proud Scot came from Pringle

To lead in a winner at the Races of Dingle.

I was twelve years of age when I rode the grey mare

At Baile an tSagairt for a farmer from Clare;

Not a reck in my pocket to jangle or jingle,

Yet as happy as Larry at the Races of Dingle.

When Lindbergh looked down on that beautiful bay,

On his lone flight to Paris from Amerikay,

His heart missed a beat and his pulse went a-tingle

“I’ll be back soon,” said he “for the Races of Dingle”.

A celibate dolphin called Fungi swims nigh

(There’d be fierce consternation if he said goodbye)

Destined, I know, to be pure, chaste and single

For fear he’d miss out on the Races of Dingle.

So I’ll say in conclusion, “go mbeirimíd beo”,

When my time comes I hope up above I will go.

The sound of the hooves beside ocean and shingle

Will be Heaven to me at the Races of Dingle.

(From the pen of the late great Garry McMahon. Leaba i measc na laochra go raibh aige. Céad míle fáilte to all our visitors – go dté sibh slán.)

Moilligh Mo Luas, A Thiarna

Moilligh mo luas, a Thiarna, Moilligh mo luas!

Laghdaigh torann mo chroí

tré mhearathal m’intinn a chiúnú.

Bronn orm suaimhneas síoraí na gcnoc

i measc cíorthuathail an lae.

Bris an teannas atá im’ mhatáin is im’ néaróga

le suantraí suaimhneach na sruthán ceolmhar

a mhaireann i mo chuimhne.

Bronn orm cumhacht draíochta ath-fhás suain.

Múin dom an bua a cheadóidh dom sámhnas,

Chun áilneas bláth a mheas,

Chun comhrá cairdiúil a chleachtadh,

Is giota gonta a léamh as dea-leabhar.

Meabhraigh dom ó ló go ló finscéal

An giorria agus an tortóis

Ionas go dtuigfidh mé nach ag an té

Is luafaire a bhíonn an bua i gcónaí.

Cas mo shúile i dtreo na spéartha.

I lúb na coille craobhaí

‘Sí an dair an crann is maorga

Toisc fás righin, mall na mbliain.

Moilligh mo luas, a Thiarna

Agus spreag mé chun mo phréamha

A chur go doimhin in ithir shaibhir,

Bhuan an idéalachais Chríostaí

I dtreo is go seolfar mé ar raon na bhFlaitheas.

Moilligh mo luas, a Thiarna, Moilligh mo luas!

(Fuaireamar an Machnamh seo ó Tadhg ó Pléimionn agus Dr. Liam Ó Murchú, Árd Eaglais Naomh Muire, Cill Áirne. B’é Pádraig Ó Siochrú a d’aistrigh é le haghaidh an tAifreann Naofa a chraolamar ar Raidió na Gaeltachta 18/7/2010.)

Craoibh na hÉireann, Dingle Races and Regatta

Lord God, we thank you for continuing health of mind and body. We thank you also for good sporting competition and for success and failure when they come our way. Help us to compete to the fullness of our abilities but not to make winning at all costs the pinnacle of our ambition. If we achieve success may we accept it with gratitude. Comfort us with the realisation that it is often on the anvil of failure that true character is moulded and shaped. We make our prayer through Christ our Lord. AMEN.

As we hail our vanquished Kingdom heroes of last weekend in Páirc an Chrócaigh we say comhghairdeas to Mná Chiarraí who enjoyed victory over famed Mayo. Go n-éirí go geal le foireann Sóisear na Ríochta who play Lancashire this weekend in Manchester – winners to meet Sligo in the Junior All-Ireland Final. To all involved in the Races and forthcoming Regatta fé choimirce Dé sibh go léir.

Fómhar na Feirme –Sunday 15th August at 11.30am when we give thanks for the Fruits of the Land and the work of human hands..
