The Meaning of Marriage
Children, as they grow and mature, deserve from society a clear understanding of the importance of marriage. Without protection and support for the unique place of marriage in society, the State could, in effect, deprive children of the right to a mother and father.
Marriage is a total communion of life and of love with God of the married couple in their family life. Women and men find companionship in that relationship, where they complement each other, not because they are the same but because they are different. Their marriage is not just for themselves or for the children they may have. The family is the church in the home.

Laochra an Chreidimh II – Patrons
“Simon” Founder – Anton Wallich Clifford
Anton Clifford worked as a probation officer in the Bow Street courts in London. His work brought him into to contact with many homeless and destitute people, who were presented before the courts on charges of petty theft, vagrancy and loitering. He recognised their powerlessness when faced with the might of the courts. He became dissatisfied with his work and felt that, as a probation officer, he could not do enough to help them. Anton left his job and began visiting these same people, wherever he could find them – in old cars, under bridges, in railway stations, in public parks. He established places of welcome – mostly basements – where the destitute could come for shelter. When he noticed that many of these people were Irish, he travelled to Ireland to set up similar houses of welcome. He named his helpers the Simon Community. Though the Simon Community is non-denominational, the title comes from the New Testament character, Simon of Cyrene, who helped Jesus carry the cross.
Fr. Tomás Ó Luanaigh, while serving as Emigrant Chaplain in London knew Anton. It is worth recording that our Irish exiles as members of the Pioneer Total Abstinence Association helped organize fundraising in support of Simon Community. They also helped out on the nightly Soup Runs, meeting and providing food for many fellow Irish exiles among other homeless.
How would you describe Anton’s motivation?
What kind of moral courage did Anton display?

Nollaig na mBan – Women’s Christmas
Nollaig na mBan – Women’s Christmas is sometimes called Women’s Little Christmas or Small Christmas. The tradition, still very strong in Cork and Kerry is so called because of the Irish men taking on all the household duties for the day. Most women hold parties or go out to celebrate the day with their friends, sisters, mothers, and aunts. Bars and restaurants serve mostly women and girls on this night. Children often buy presents for their mothers and grandmothers. The tradition honours all women within the 12 Days of Christmas.
Guímis go raibh suáilcí Mháthair Dé mar lón anama, chun misneach agus chun dóchas a thabhairt do mhná an domhain ina n-iarrachtaí cothrom na Féinne a bhaint amach. Amen
Churchgate Collections
Dingle Parish Pastoral Council reminds all holders of Garda permits for Churchgate Collections to please carefully observe the law involved and note that there are 21 conditions attached to all Garda permits. While the community spirit and selfless generosity of all volunteers is to be lauded, it is advised that they retain a copy or photocopy of the actual permit. On no account should such collections be taken up within church buildings. Therefore, as all Churchgate collections must enjoy Garda clearance, it is essential that State law be respected and observed at all times.

Learning from the Magi
The great thing about the Magi was their faith. Even though they were outsiders (Gentiles), they recognised Christ as the Saviour of the world.
The picture many people have of how the Magi came to Bethlehem goes somewhat like this. They saw a bright star in the eastern sky and began to follow it. The star guided them unerringly, first to Jerusalem, where it temporarily disappeared, and then to Bethlehem where they found the Child Jesus.
Their journey was neither simple nor easy. They encountered difficulties, doubts and dangers. Yet, in spite of these they persevered in their quest, and were rewarded when they finally found Christ. This is why their story has such relevance for us. Like them we too are on a journey. When we start out on some road, we too are attracted by something bright – an ideal or vision or hope. And we must expect to encounter difficulties and doubts. Some people think they are losing their faith when they experience doubt. We must not be surprised when this happens. We must imitate the Magi. We must not be too proud to ask for guidance. We must believe that the darkness will pass, and once again we will see the initial star beckoning to us.
The Magi can serve as models for us on our faith journey. They were single-minded. They refused to be put off by difficulties and hardships. When they found Christ they offered him gold, frankincense and myrrh. This shows what happens to those who find Christ. Their hearts are awakened and burst into life. When we find Christ and offer our love to him, he will help us to open up the treasures of goodness that lie buried inside us, so that we can offer ‘gifts’ to our brothers and sisters, especially those who are poor as Christ was. Having worshipped Christ, the Magi, ‘returned to their own country by another route’. This suggests not just a new geographical route, but a new mentality. Having met Christ and heard the Gospel, we too will travel through life by a different route. (Flor McCarthy SDB)
