Section 99 on the Sale of Mass Cards

Teach an Easpaig,

Cill Áirne,

Dear Father,

Please see below a press release from Mr. John Curran T.D., Minister of State at the Department of Community, Rural and Gaeltacht Affairs. Minister Curran is responsible for the charities regulation, and last Wednesday he announced that he will be commencing Section 99 of the Charities Act 2009 as of this 1 September, 2009. This means that as of 1 September, retailers will be liable to prosecution for selling pre-signed Mass cards. You may wish to bring this information to the attention of your parishioners.

With every good wish.

Yours sincerely,

+ Bill Murphy

Bishop of Kerry

Minister John Curran said:

“The sale of pre-signed Mass cards in shops, as opposed to directly from the Catholic Church, has been a matter of public concern for some time. The concerns are twofold: One, will a Mass be actually offered in respect of the specific intentions offered? Two, is there an element of profit behind the sale of such cards? The commencement of these provisions will enable the public to ascertain from those selling the Mass cards whether they have an arrangement in place with the Church to sell such cards.”

RTÉ Radio Broadcast Masses for the Sick

Aifreann Raidió na Gaeltachta

A Phobail Dhíl,

Looking back on our four broadcasts we say míle buíochas to all parishioners who generously participated in the liturgies broadcast worldwide at the invitation of RTE. Some messages, including phonecalls from England, sent to our Parish Liturgy Groups included the express gratitude of RTE Head of Broadcasting Mr. Roger Childs, conveyed through Producer Pat Hogan.

A Glasnevin listener writes “I heard the broadcast as I was getting ready for my own Choir Mass and in total it was riveting … homily, music and especially the way you introduced the gifts brought to the Altar.

May God bless your ministry which was so comforting to the sick and housebound. Please thank Alice and Áine (as fellow musicians to me!). Tell them to keep going – The Lord needs them and you more than ever.”

Ms. Margaret Hayes as co-ordinator of Religious Programming wrote: “Thanks to all involved … and for allowing us the opportunity of sharing the Liturgy with a wider audience. Once again thank you for having us back in St. Mary’s Church for the Radio broadcasts”.

“Imígí agus fógraígí an Dea-scéal”
