Machnamh / Reflection

Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate,
but that we are powerful beyond measure.
It is our light, not our darkness,
that most frightens us.
We ask ourselves, ‘Who am I to be brilliant,
gorgeous, talented and fabulous?’
Actually, who are you not to be?
You are a child of God.
Your playing small doesn’t serve the world.
There’s nothing enlightened about shrinking
so that other people won’t feel insecure around you.
We are born to make manifest the Glory of God
that is within us.
It’s not just in some of us; it’s in everyone.
And as we let our own light shine,
we unconsciously give other people permission
to do the same.
As we are liberated from our own fear,
our presence automatically liberates others.
Amen.

Just a Thought / Smaoineamh

Fishing is a worthy calling. However, Jesus saw that Peter was capable of other things. He was the kind of man he wanted to have helping him with his work. What qualities did Jesus see in Peter that made him call him to share in his work? He had the first and most essential one – faith in Jesus. He also had humility.
The Gospel story is not so much a story about fishing, but about trust. Jesus was saying to Peter: ‘How far are you prepared to trust me?’ It was a turning point in the life of Peter. What started out in failure ended in a new beginning, starting out in a new direction.
