Safeguarding Sunday
October 14th 2018

Message from Bishop of Kerry and Chairperson of the Diocesan Safeguarding Committee
We welcome this initiative to have an annual Safeguarding Sunday in the Diocese. Each year it will remind us all that the key to safeguarding is good public awareness of the potential danger to children and the importance of good practice across the Diocese.
Safeguarding Sunday this year gives us an opportunity to remember and say thanks to all who have voluntarily worked for the cause in the Diocese, at diocesan or parish level over the past twenty years and more. Special thanks to those who continue to serve at this time.
The week of his visit to Ireland Pope Francis wrote a letter to the People of God, to the whole Church worldwide. Two sentences from that letter reminds us why Safeguarding is so important. “Even though it can be said that most of these cases belong to the past, nonetheless as time goes on we have come to know the pain of many of the victims. We have realised that these wounds never disappear and that they require us forcefully to condemn these atrocities.”

Canonisation of Archbishop Oscar Romero
This Sunday, 14th October 2018, at a ceremony in Rome, Pope Francis will officially recognise the sainthood of Oscar Romero, Archbishop of San Salvador. It is a fitting tribute to an extraordinary man, whose life still influences the work of Trōcaire and similar organisations working for human rights around the world.

Smaoineamh

Disappointments are part and parcel of life. Some we expect, some just happen and more happen totally unexpected. While they do set us back, we can certainly pick up the pieces and get going again. In most cases we re-adjust, we learn from the experience and move on. Trying to avoid disappointments is impossible; it’s restrictive and means we are out of touch with real life. Even in our Gospels, Jesus and his friends experienced setbacks and disappointments. Everything did not go according to plan, not everyone welcomed them but yet they kept going forward in hope. An old saying probably sums it up best, ‘Our best success comes after our greatest disappointments.’
Pray for Hannah Devane, (nee McKenna) Oakpark, Tralee and late of Leataoibh; Bridie Corridan, (nee Griffin), Kilmanihan, Brosna and late of Doonties. Suaimhneas síoraí dá n-anamacha.
