20th World Day of The Sick
Feb. 11th Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes
“Stand up and go; your faith has saved you” (Lk 17:19)
From a reading of the Gospels it emerges clearly that Jesus always showed special concern for sick people. He not only sent out his disciples to tend their wounds (cf. Mt 10:8; Lk 9:2; 10:9) but also instituted for them a specific sacrament: the Anointing of the Sick. The Letter of James attests to the presence of this sacramental act already in the first Christian community (cf. 5:14-16): by the Anointing of the Sick, accompanied by the prayer of the elders, the whole of the Church commends the sick to the suffering and glorified Lord so that he may alleviate their sufferings and save them; indeed she exhorts them to unite themselves spiritually to the passion and death of Christ so as to contribute thereby to the good of the People of God.
This sacrament deserves greater consideration today both in theological reflection and in pastoral ministry among the sick. Through a proper appreciation of the content of the liturgical prayers that are adapted to the various human situations connected with illness, and not only when a person is at the end of his or her life (cf. Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1514), the Anointing of the Sick should not be held to be almost “a minor sacrament” when compared to the others. Attention to and pastoral care for sick people, while, on the one hand, a sign of God’s tenderness towards those who are suffering, on the other brings spiritual advantage to priests and the whole Christian community as well, in the awareness that what is done to the least, is done to Jesus himself (cf. Mt25:40).
As regards the “sacraments of healing”, Saint Augustine affirms: “God heals all your infirmities. Do not be afraid, therefore, all your infirmities will be healed … You must only allow him to cure you and you must not reject his hands” (Exposition on Psalm 102, 5; PL 36, 1319-1320). These are precious instruments of God’s grace which help a sick person to conform himself or herself ever more fully to the mystery of the death and resurrection of Christ. Fr. Michael Drumm, executive chairperson of Catholic Schools Partnership (CSP), said the Government should be considering a strategic plan that would include the school community.
“Nothing is more important than schools. Pupil teacher ratio is choking small schools slowly and surely.”
Eileen Flynn, general secretary of the Catholic Primary School Management Association (CPSMA) said “A blanket pupil teacher ratio policy that removes context or circumstances does not make sense, and we may regret it down the line.”
Savage cuts in Education
Spending on education needs to be ring-fenced. We are witnessing the spectacle of various interest within education being pitted against each other in a cynical attempt to make people do more with less. Children with special needs have been pitted against those from disadvantaged backgrounds. School guidance counsellors have been pitted against school chaplains. Educational stakeholders need to stand together and resist cuts to education. There are other savings that can and must be found elsewhere in Exchequer spending.
Children don’t get a second chance at education. We can’t turn around to children and tell them ‘it’s hard luck that you were born when you were’. Education, as has been known by generations of Irish people, is the path to freedom and, ultimately, the path to future prosperity.

The Blessing and Opening of Ospidéal Pobal Chorca Dhuibhne
Aire Sláinte Dr. James Reilly T.D. opened the new Hospital on Friday last. The Ecumenical Blessing was celebrated by Fr. Tomás Ó Luanaigh S.P. and Rev. Joe Hardy, Church of Ireland.

God of all consolation, your Son Jesus went about healing all manner of diseases; continue his work today through the Health Service Executive and the hands of all those who work for the sick. Give them knowledge and wisdom, patience and sympathy; and make fruitful their ministry. A Thiarna, éist linn.
2. Send your blessing, Lord God, upon doctors, nurses, care and domestic staff, maintenance and security staff and all who assist them. Enable them to make progress against disease and illness, to ease the sufferings of the afflicted, and to encourage healthy living. May the gifts you have given them be used to restore the ill to health so that they may again work for your greater glory.
3. Merciful Lord, comfort of those who believe in you, in humility we ask you to bless all those who are ill just as you came to the mother of St. Peter’ wife. Be with them and help them and when their health is restored, may their voices be raised in your Church in thanksgiving to you.
