Children’s Referendum
In the Referendum, people will be asked to vote on inserting a new Article into the Constitution that deals directly with children. The referendum will be held on Saturday, Nov. 10th 2012. Stations open 9am – 10pm.

A Young Person of Faith
Teenager Chiara Luce Badano (1971-1990)
Chiara Badano was born in October 1971 in the small town of Sassello in Italy. Her father was a truck driver and her mother worked at home taking care of Chiara.
Her mother taught her to love, respect and care for those in need. By the time she was ready to start school Chiara was saving her money to support Mission work in Africa. At school she would give her lunch to a less fortunate classmate. And, when her mother gave her two lunches. Chiara simply gave them both away, because she cared so much about others. Such was her care and compassion.
When Chiara went to secondary school she was a good student and worked hard, at times she struggled with some subjects. She enjoyed normal teenage pastimes such as listening to music, dancing, singing, hiking, tennis and swimming.
When she was 16 years old she had a life changing experience in Rome with the Focolare Movement. Chiara had Luce meaning Light added to her name. She saw Jesus as being her light in life, he alone would guide her way. Chiara was a genuine friend of Jesus.
During the summer of 1988, Chiar felt a pain in her shoulder while playing tennis. It continued to pain her so she went to the doctor and had some tests. The doctors then discovered she had a rare and painful form of bone cancer.
Chiara never complained about the pain. During her stay in hospital, she would take the time to go on walks with another patient who was struggling with her illness and feeling depressed. These walks were beneficial to the other patient but caused Chiara pain. Chiara, with her compassionate nature, wished to help someone else in need, just like Jesus did.
Chiara kept her spirits up, even when she had chemotherapy. She knew Jesus was by her side caring for her. She donated all her savings to a friend who was doing Mission work in Africa.
When her mother and the doctor told her she would not get better she simply smiled and said: “Don’t worry, I am going to Jesus. And Mum when I’m gone just keep saying to yourself, ‘Chiara Luce is now seeing Jesus and is very happy to be with Jesus.’”
Chiara spent her final hours surrounded by her family and friends who prayed with her “Come Holy Spirit, Come.” Her last words were: “Be happy, because I am.” Chiara was only 18 years old when she died on 7th October 1990. Thousands of people attended her funeral. The mayor of Sassello shut down the town so people would be able to attend the funeral Mass.
Pope Benedict XVI beatified Chiara Luce on September 25th, 2010 in Rome, her feast day is on October 29th.
Mons. Hugh O’Flaherty International Humanitarian Award 2012
This year’s Hugh O’Flaherty International Humanitarian Award 2012 will be presented to Sr. Agnes Hunt for her work on behalf of Irish Council for Prisoners Overseas. There are more than 1,200 Irish People in prisons throughout the world. The ICPO has contact with Irish people in prisons in more than twenty countries, stretching from the English speaking world of the UK, the USA and Australia, to countries such as France, Thailand, Argentina, Egypt and Cuba.
In 1985 the bishops saw that the problems of emigrants who get into trouble with the law require specialised attention. They decided to set up, as a sub-section of their Emigrants’ Commission. www.usairish.org/icpo

All parishioners who have died since Nov 1st 2011 will be especially remembered in Masses during the first week of November as above. All family members are invited to attend and at Guí an Phobail a family representative will light a commemorative candle as we name and pray for their faithful departed. Representatives are asked to sit in the front seats please. You may take the candle home. Parishioners who have lost a loved one, residing elsewhere, since November 2011 and wish to have them included are invited to notify the Celebrant, in the Sacristy, before the start of Mass. (Candles will be provided).
Now they can rest from their work for their good deeds go with them. (Rev 14:13)
Commemoration of All Souls
Norms for Indulgences
1. All who have confessed, received Holy Communion, and prayed for the Pope’s intentions (one Our Father and Hail Mary, or any other prayer of one’s choice) can gain one plenary indulgence by visiting a church or oratory, and there reciting one Our Father and the Apostles’ Creed. This indulgence is applicable only to the souls of the departed. Confession may be made at any time within the week preceding or the week following 1st November. Holy Communion may be received on any day from 1st to 8th November.
2. The faithful who visit a cemetery and pray for the dead may gain a plenary indulgence applicable only to the Holy Souls on the usual conditions once per day from 1st to 8th November. The conditions mentioned above apply also for this.
