Bliain an Chreidimh – Our Patron Saints Laochra an Chreidimh No.58.
St. Catherine came from Egypt in a barrel and was washed up in Ventry. She was a Princess of Egypt and her parents were King Cotus and Queen Sabinella. She is the patron Saint of school children and the Phillipines.
I picked this name because she was a princess and she died for her beliefs. (Aoife – Bunscoil an Chlochar)
Séipéal Naomh Caitlín Naofa
Séipéal Chaitlíona, Árd a’ bhóthair, Fionn Trá has served as Teach an Phobail for parishioners in the western part of the Parish since the 1860’s. This beautiful sandstone church which is dedicated to St. Catherine of Alexandria was modernized and refurbished in 1980-1981 under the late Bishop of Kerry and our former Sagart Paróiste Diarmuid Ó Súilleabháín. Local artist Bob Ó Cathail was commissioned by Monsignor Pádraig Ó Fiannachta to represent the Passion scene showing the actions of Pontius Pilate in ndíl chuimhne ar Mháirín Uí Dálaigh on the wall behind the main altar. His creation shows the wonderful legend from our tradition of native spirituality “Mac na hÓighe Slán” – “the Son of the Virgin is Safe”.
The martyrdom of Catherine has led to a whole complexity of stories and traditions. The torture wheel has become an iconic symbol as has the tradition of “the catherine wheel” in our time. It is believed that her remains are now housed in the Orthodox Monastery of Mount Sinai in Southern Egypt where the burning bush of Moses is also on view. Catherine is patron saint of wheelweights and single women. Her Pattern day is November 25th.

Prayer for Syria
This Saturday 7th September, Pope Francis has called for a day of solidarity with the people of Syria through prayer and fasting.
God of Mercy,
Look upon our brothers and sisters in Syria with compassion,
Hear their cries and answer them,
Protect them in their hour of need,
Comfort them in their mourning,
Journey with them as they flee the harsh reality of war,
to a place of comfort and lasting peace.
Inspire all leaders to seek love over hatred,
And create in them the courage to ease
the suffering of a people.
May we as followers of Christ, be an example of your loving mercy here on earth,
For it is in giving to all that we receive.
We ask this prayer through Jesus Christ, Prince of Peace. Amen.
Intercessory Prayers
1. We pray for the people of Syria where over 8.4 million are in need of humanitarian assistance. May God deliver them to a place of peace.
2. We pray for those working for peace in Syria . In particular, we pray for our fellow Irish men and women who have put their lives on the line in an effort to bring a source of comfort to those most in need in this conflicted area.

Lá ‘Le Muire an Daingin – Lady Day Dingle
On Sunday September 8th we celebrate our Parish Pattern Day. Rejoicing in the birthday of Mary, mother of our Lord you are warmly invited to spend special time in Marian prayer and devotion this Sunday by attending Mass, praying the Angelus, Family Rosary, reflecting on the enclosed or lighting a candle at our Lady of Good Counsel shrine in the porch of St. Mary’s.
“Mairg nach molann Muire”
“Let us celebrate the birth of the Virgin Mary. Let us adore her Son, Christ the Lord. When the sacred virgin was born, then the world was filled with light; blessed and holy is the stock which bore such blessed Mary so that she may intercede for us with the Lord Jesus Christ. Your birth O Virgin Mother of God, announced joy to the whole world for from you has risen the Sun of Justice. He released us from the ancient curse and made us blessed.” (Liturgy of the Hours)
“Father of mercy, give your people help and strength from heaven. The birth of the Virgin Mary’s Son was the dawn of our salvation. May this celebration of her birthday bring us closer to lasting peace.” (Collect Prayers of Feast)

Know Yourself
About 4 years ago at the end of a series of talks on the “Spiritual Life,” which I offered at the Díseart, I invited those who attended the course to a weekend workshop, which began on Friday evening 8.00 – 9.30 pm and continued on Saturday morning 10.00am – 4.00pm.
I have been asked on a number of occasions since if I could offer the workshop again. The workshop, which has as its objective spiritual and personal growth through developing greater self- knowledge is known as the Myers-Briggs Personality Type Indicator. It is a method of self-assessment and it is non-intrusive. It is based on the research and teachings of the renowned psychologist Carl Jung and is used extensively by major business and professional groups, including Church groups on staff development programmes.
It has also been used very successfully in retreats and Spiritual Direction programmes having growth in the spiritual life through greater self-knowledge and awareness as its objective.
St Teresa of Avila in her Spiritual Classic The Interior Castle states very clearly that self-knowledge is the key to spiritual growth and advises those who have embarked on the inner journey to return frequently to the “cell” of self-knowledge.
In its objectives it is similar to the Enneagram but is more scientific in its approach in the sense that the programme is based on extensive research and sound psychological theory.
If you think that you would like to attend please email me: jimsheehy@diseart.ie or ring me at: 0862625498. Because of the work involved in preparing and presenting the weekend I can only accommodate 12 or at the most 15 participants.
A possible weekend might be Friday 27th and Saturday 28th of September. (Fr. Jim Sheehy)
