Caintic an Bhráthar Grian
A Thiarna mhaith ró-ard na n-uile chumhacht!
Leatsa gach moladh is glóir, gach onóir is gach beannú.
Duit féin amháin, a Ró-ard, is cóir á dtabhairt
Is ní fiú duine ar bith tú a lua.
Moladh leat, a Thiarna liom, le lán líon do dhúl.
Go háirithe a Shoilse, an Bráthair Grian,
Óir is é an lá é, agus is tríd a shoilsíonn tú sinn.
Agus é sciamhach is lonrach le niamhracht mhór,
Go mbeireann sé chugainn, a Ró-ard, do shamhailse.
Moladh leat, a Thiarna liom, ón tSiúr Ré is na réaltaí;
Thuas sa spéir a chum tú iad go gléineach, iad ina seoda, iad spéiriúil.
Moladh leat, a Thiarna liom, ón mbráthair Gaoth,
Is ón aer, is ó scamallacht is ó shoineann is ó gach síon,
Ós tríothusan do chréatúir a thugann tú scamhard.
Moladh leat, a Thiarna liom, ón tSiúr Uisce
Atá fíorfhóinteach is uiríseal, is atá ina seoid agus geanmnaí.
Moladh leat, a Thiarna liom, ónár Siúr Bás na colainne
Nach dtig le haon duine beo éalú óna lámh.
Is mairg a éagann i bpeacaí atá marfach;
Is méanar dóibh sin ar a dtiocfaidh sise is iad ar do mhianta rónaofa,
Óir ní dochar dóibh an dara bás.

The Cry of Earth / Caoineadh na Cruinne
‘Bronntanas ó Dhia do gach duine atá sa timpeallacht, agus tá freagracht orainn í a úsáid ar son na mbochtán, ar son na nglún atá le teacht agus ar son an chine daonna I gcoitinne …’ – Pápa Beinidict XVI
Witnesses to Hope and Ecological Conversion
In 1979, Pope John Paul II proclaimed Francis of Assisi as the patron saint of ecology. Francis did not look at the natural world in terms of human usefulness alone, how it provides food, clothing and shelter for humans. Rather, his response to the gift of creation was joy, wonder, praise and gratitude. One of the great legacies of Francis is that he expanded the concept of ‘neighbour’ to include not only the human race, but the whole of creation and all of its creatures.
Many of our Celtic saints, such as Patrick, Ciarán, Bridget, Columba and Columban, also showed special love for God’s creatures. In his letter on Grace, St. Columban wrote: ‘If you wish to know about God, learn about his creatures.’
“We must defend not only earth, water and air as gifts of creation that belong to everyone. We must above all protect mankind from self-destruction”. – Pope Benedict XVI.
Lord, grant us the wisdom to care for your earth and till it. Help us to act now for the good of future generations and all your creatures. Help us to become instruments of a new creation, founded on the covenant of your love. AMEN
Local Action
The November monthly meeting of Dingle Parish Pastoral Council reflecting on “The Cry of the Earth” sought new means of caring for our environment, its resources and God’s gift of creation. Close attention was given to our own high energy costs especially E.S.B. and Calor Gas, with a view to seeking actions and a Parish policy more in keeping with best practice as recommended by the Bishops’ Pastoral letter asking every Parish to “monitor and improve your energy use”.
The Pastoral letter is available in 3 languages, English, Irish and Polish on www.catholicbishops.ie.
Prayer of the Faithful
Lord, we pray for all parish communities – that we may have the courage, individually and collectively, to construct a more sustainable environment for all.
Lord, Hear Us.
