Pope Benedict XVI

An Saol Críostaí

Creid, a mhic, i nDia go glan.

Ná tabhair ainm Dé gan fáth.

Coiméad an tsaoire mar is cóir.

Tabhair do d’athair is do do mháthair onóir.

Ná déan marú, goid ná drúis,

Ná tabhair fianaise bhréige ar aon chúis.

Ná santaigh fear ná bean nach leat féin,

Ná clann duine eile ná a airnéis.

The Ten Commandments

Believe, my child, in God alone.

Never take God’s name in vain.

Keep the Sabbath as is right.

Honour your father and your mother.

Do no killing, theft or lust,

give no false witness for any cause.

Do no covet a man or wife that is not yours

or anyone else’s family or goods.

Irish Bishops’ Pastoral Response

Towards Healing and Renewal

The first anniversary of the publication of the Pastoral Letter of Pope Benedict XVI to the Catholics of Ireland occurs on 19th March 2011. To mark this anniversary Irish bishops wish to bring the following three important initiatives to the attention of the faithful: the publication of their pastoral response Towards Healing and Renewal; the new Catholic counselling and support service for survivors of abuse called Faoiseamh; and, the progress of listening and consultation exercises which have been taking place.

The pastoral response outlines different undertakings that the bishops are making on the journey emphasised by the survivors of abuse. These steps include:

  • Prayer for the Survivors of Abuse;
  • a commitment to listening;
  • spiritual support;
  • creating a safer future for children;
  • a review of Dioceses and Religious Orders;
  • financial support for the work of safeguarding.

Prayers of Intercession

  • We pray for all those who have suffered abuse of any kind: that the Lord of all tenderness and compassion will restore them and give them peace.
  • We pray that we may become more and more a parish community that actively cares for and protects the most vulnerable sections of our society.
  • We pray for the Spirit of wisdom: that it will enlighten the minds of all people and lead to a growth in awareness and determination.
  • We pray for all in the healing professions who minister to those who suffer as a result of violence or abuse: that God will give them an abundance of love, compassion and wisdom.

Prayer

God our rock and our strength on whom we lean, help us to create an atmosphere of trust which allows the unspeakable to be said. Help us to live with our painful memories.

May we support each other and be safe places for each other. We pray this in the name of Jesus, your compassion made flesh, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, now and for ever. Amen.
