Ár gCóineartú – Our Patron Saints Laochra an Chreidimh No. 84.
St. Maurice was born in Thebes, Egypt in the 3rd century but he lived all his life in Magdeburg, Germany. St. Maurice was the leader of the legendary Roman Theban Legion in the 3rd century, and one of the favourite and most widely venerated saints of that group. He was the patron saint of several professions, places and kingdoms but is mainly seen as the patron saint of troops and armies. He is also a highly revered saint in the Oriental Orthodox churches. He died in Agaunum, Switzerland. Saint Maurice’s feast day is on the 22nd of September. I chose St. Maurice because it is my grandfather’s name. (Robert – Scoil Eoin Baiste)

Temperance Sunday – March 2nd 2014
John, a former pupil of mine in the early 1970s, met with me for coffee recently. Conversation was of reminisces, of life’s journey right up to the present. In the course of our chat, knowing that he was a risk taker when I first knew him, I asked if he ever became mixed up in drug misuse. In 1981 he was offered cocaine. I was surprised to learn that ‘coke’ was part of the drug scene back then. The early 80s was when ‘heroin’ hit inner City Dublin and Cork. Young people began the destructive journey of re-capturing their ‘first hit’, but getting addicted on the way.
Back to John – at 19 he paused in front of the offer of ‘coke’ and said to himself – ‘What if I like it?’ What will the financial and health consequences be? He declined.
Not a bad question, ‘What if I like it?’ What will the consequences be in my life? He made a right judgement, a prudent judgement, not to mention a wise one for him, his future family and career.
To calculate the consequence of any action, is not a bad approach in a world of ‘buzz’, ‘getting smashed’, and ‘high’, as quickly and as cheaply as possible.
It is not uncommon for people to say ‘I lost my temper with the children’. When we ‘go over the top’, ‘lose it’, we know right away, even though it is inevitable we may make excuses and even go down the blame game route. Temper your anger, count to ten, get a grip of yourself, are common currency in prompting self-control. Don’t mention self-control – it is not cool, it restricts freedom, it’s old-fashioned and smacks of inhibiting self-expression! To be contd. (Intercom: Bishop Eamon Walsh)
