Commemoration of All Souls
Norms for Indulgences
1. From 12 noon on Nov 1st to midnight on Nov 2nd, all who have confessed, received Holy Communion, and prayed for the Pope’s intentions (one Our Father and Hail Mary, or any other prayer of one’s choice) can gain one plenary indulgence by visiting a church or oratory, and there reciting one Our Father and the Apostles’ Creed. This indulgence is applicable only to the souls of the departed. Confession may be made any time within the week preceding or the week following 1st Nov. Holy Communion may be received on any day Nov. 1st to 8th.
2. The faithful who visit a cemetery and pray for the dead may gain a plenary indulgence applicable only to the Holy Souls on the usual conditions once per day November 1st to 8th.
What are Indulgences?
Indulgences are the remission of temporal punishment due to sin, granted to the faithful who recite specified prayers, visit a specified place of pilgrimage or engage in a specified act of charity; punishment is remitted through the power of the Church and in the mutual exchange of spiritual goods, particularly the merits of Christ and the saints.

Honouring All Saints – Holyday next Sat.
To some who have a rather narrow understanding of the term ‘saint’ it may come as a surprise to learn that ‘saint’ is the commonest name used by the New Testament writers to describe the generality of Christians. All those who through faith and baptism had become members of a ‘chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation’ (1 Pet. 2:9) were called to sainthood, that is, to a life worthy of their calling as followers of Christ (cf. Eph. 4:1). St. Paul who frequently addresses his readers as saints (cf. e.g. Rom. 1:7; 1 Cor. 1:2; Phil. 1:1) continually urges them to display the highest moral excellence in their lives, and he summons them to reject the ‘world’ that is opposed to God (Rom. 12:1f.; 1 Cor. 6, 9-11; Eph. 5:3 etc.). St. Peter follows the same line of thought when he reminds his readers of their obligation to live holy lives in imitation of the Holy One who called them (cf. 1 Pet. 1:15).
Nevertheless, as Christians, and as Catholics, we have an obligation to honour the saints of long ago who formed and developed the spiritual tradition to which we are heirs. We belong to a community whose faith and devotions have deep roots in history, and if we are to appreciate our community’s religious heritage we must know something about that heritage. Knowledge of the different expressions of Christian holiness that are to be found in the lives of the saints of past ages and past cultures enriches our understanding of our faith and of our piety, and helps to enlarge our spiritual horizons. In proposing for our veneration saints from all areas of the Church’s history and from a large variety of spiritual currents within that history, we belong to a Church which has never failed to produce people who were remarkable for holiness. And at the same time they were implicitly reminding us, as present-day bearers of the Christian tradition, that we too must discover a sanctity that suits our own age and our own mentality, and that, in its turn, will have something to say to later generations of Christians. (Editor: Fr. Austin Flannery O.P.)
NB: For Confirmation Candidates 2014/2015. Bishop Browne has sent us the following instructions about
Choosing a Confirmation Name
“The Confirmandi are required to choose the name of a saint for Confirmation. It is important that they know that the saint was a person of faith and prayer and that they reflected on how they themselves can be people of faith.”
