Temperance Sunday
The Irish Bishops’ Drug Initiative issued the following statement for Temperance Sunday.
”Temperance is a virtue which can help us to moderate the attraction to substances like alcohol and so avoid excessive use.
Alcohol, when used in moderation, can be good and a part of our social life. However we must remember that alcohol is also the number one drug in our country, and does affect us in some way.
Consider some of these facts:
- Alcohol is a drug, and a drug changes the way the body works. It affects the mind, the body and emotions. Alcohol is a depressant.
- Alcohol affects every single person in Ireland today. We cannot deny this when we consider:
- One in three deaths on the road are alcohol related
- One in four of the most serious domestic abuse cases involve alcohol.
- One in four A&E Hospital admissions are alcohol related (Alcohol Action Ireland 2008).
Heavy drinking affects the health and well-being of many of our friends, family and neighbours and many experts associate depression, suicide, anxiety and increasing lack of self confidence with our increased consumption of alcohol.
Alcohol is everywhere in our society and approximately €55million is being spent by the Alcohol Industry convincing us through advertising that it is a necessary part of a successful lifestyle. It is unfortunate that our young people have to be bombarded with advertisements promoting alcohol products in so many sports arenas, at prime times on our televisions, in flyers distributed alongside so many promotions by pubs, off licenses and supermarkets.
We know anecdotally that every family is in some way affected by alcohol harm in Irish society. All of this tells us something which needs to register with us so that we can see that we can all do something to help, rather than waiting for Government to lead.
We are asked to pray this weekend for all living with addictions. Help is available – The Samaritans; The Pioneer Total Abstinence Association; and Alcoholics Anonymous can always be contacted. Let us pray for all those who find themselves in the grip of addictions of any kind; for families and those who give them help and support.
Pioneers
We think also of the work of the Pioneer Total Abstinence Association, The Pioneer Website explains: The spirituality of the association is based on prayer, self denial and reparation. Prayer for those who are suffering because of their own or others excess consumption of alcohol; and total abstinence as self denial and for the pain and damage done by excess use of alcohol. In their devotion to the Sacred Heart Pioneers strive to love unconditionally as Jesus does, learn to accept whatever crosses come their way, and reduce egotistical needs so that they can enter into closed communion with the Heart of Christ.
Contact local Pioneer members Kathleen Sheehy (087-6643152) and Sr. de Sales (066-9151194) for further information.
Lent 2011
Ash Wednesday this year is on Wednesday, 9th of March. Masses with Imposition of Ashes will be celebrated as follows:
Dingle – N. Muire 10am & 7.30pm
Lios Póil – N. Eoin Baiste 8pm
Fionn Trá – N. Caitlín 8pm
Ash Wednesday is a day of Fast and Abstinence. Those aged between eighteen and sixty are called upon to fast on Ash Wednesday. Traditionally, this is done by taking only one small main meal and two snacks during the day. All aged 14 and over are bound to abstain from meat on Ash Wednesday.
Pope Benedict’s Lenten Message encourages us to pray for those who are preparing for baptism (Catechumens) this Easter and to use the period of Lent to reflect on our own baptismal calling:
A particular connection binds Baptism to Lent as the favorable time to experience this saving Grace. The Fathers of the Second Vatican Council exhorted all of the Church’s Pastors to make greater use “of the baptismal features proper to the Lenten liturgy”. In fact, the Church has always associated the Easter Vigil with the celebration of Baptism.
We pray for all those in our own parish who are getting ready for baptism and for parents who are getting ready to have their children baptised. We pray that our Lenten practices will deepen our own understanding of the Christian life.
Beannú an Luaithrigh
A Dhia, beannaigh an luaithreach seo atá le leagan ar ár gceann d’fhonn sinn a spreagadh chun aithrí.
Cuir do bheannacht, a Dhia, ar na daoine go leagfar an luaithreach seo ar a gceann. Go gcleachta siad aithrí an Charghais agus go dtuille siad teacht go ceiliúradh rúndiamhair na Cásca le croí glan ó gach smál. Sin é ár nguí chugat trí Chríost ár dTiarna. Áiméan.
Church Cleaners
Please consider giving one hour of your time once a month towards caring for St. Mary’s Church as we need more volunteers to complete our rota. Contact our Parish Office if you would like to become part of our devoted meitheal.
Corn Uí Mhuirí
Go n-éirí go geal le pheileadóirí Pobal Scoil Chorca Dhuibhne atá ag imirt i gcluiche cheannais na Mhumhan i Chorn Uí Mhuirí i gcoinne Coláiste Chríost Rí Dé Domhnach 6ú Márta ar a 2.30pm i Páirc Dr. Crócaigh, Lewis Rd., Cill Áirne.
A Thiarna, ofrálaim an cluiche seo duit.
Ofrálaim m’imirt duit mar urnaí agus
déanfaidh mo dhícheall.
Is tábhachtaí m’iompar ar an bpáirc inniu ná fuinneamh mo ghéag sa chluiche.
Má dheinim go maith cabhraigh liom
éirí in airde a sheachaint,
Mioscais má bhuaitear orainn agus fearg,
formad agus fíoch.
Ach, a Thiarna, táim ag tnúth leis an mbua.
Tabhair cúnamh dom, más ea, mo dhícheall a dhéanamh agus gur leor sin chun an chraobh a bhreith. AMEN
