Bliain an Chreidimh – Our Patron Saints
Laochra an Chreidimh No.35 & 36.
Naomh Clare was born in Assisi on the 16th of July 1194. She was the eldest daughter of Favorino Scifi and Ortolana. Clare was always praying as a child. But when Clare was 18 she heard Francis preaching and she ran away to follow him. He cut her hair short and dressed her in a black tunic and thick black veil. Clare was put into the convent of the Benedictine nuns near Bastia. Clare and her sister were soon moved to the Church of San Damiano, with Francis had rebuilt. By 1263, just ten years after Clare’s death, the order she founded was called the Order of St. Clare.
I picked St. Clare because my mom’s name is Clare and I like the name. I like what Clare did with her life and I like what she’s the Saint of.
(Ella – Bunscoil an Chlochair)

St Mark lived at the time of Jesus. Although he was not one of the twelve apostles of Jesus, he was a cousin of St. Barnabas, an apostle. Mark is called an evangelist because he wrote one of the four Gospels. Mark’s Gospel is short, but it gives many little details that are not in the other Gospels.
While still young, Mark went with the two great saints, Paul and Barnabas, as missionaries to bring the teachings of Jesus to Cyprus and other new lands. Before the journey was over, though, Mark had an argument with St. Paul and immediately returned to Jerusalem. Paul and Mark later made peace with each other. In fact, Paul wrote from prison in Rome that Mark came to cheer and help him.
Mark also became a beloved disciple and was like a son to St. Peter, the first Pope. St. Mark was made a Bishop and sent to Alexandria, Egypt. There, many people who heard him preach became Christians. He worked hard to spread love for Jesus and his Church and founded the first famous Christian school in Alexandria.
He went through long and painful sufferings before he died a martyr for his faith. St. Mark’s relics were brought to Venice, Italy. He is the patron saint of that famous city. People go to the beautiful Basilica of St. Mar to honour him and to pray to him.
The reason why I picked St. Mark is because my Aunt recommended it and I loved it.

The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA)
We would like to offer our congratulations to Andrina McLeod, who was received into full membership of the Catholic Church and of the Sacred Heart Parish, Annascaul at the Easter Vigil celebration of the Lord’s Resurrection on Saturday evening last.
As we welcome Andrina we offer her the assurance of our prayers and support on her ongoing journey of faith within the Catholic Church, while at the same time valuing the gifts that Andrina is so ready and happy to witness to for the enrichment of the Church and her local community.
The RCIA group will continue to meet and would welcome anybody who feels the need or the call to enquire into or learn more about the Christian faith and the Catholic Church. On reading this if you know of anybody who you feel may be interested suggest to them to contact, or ever better introduce them to your local Parish Priest who will be very happy to meet them and introduce them to the RCIA group representing the parishes of the Corca Dhuibhne Pastoral Area.
