Our 3 Christmas Cribs
Míle buíochas don mheitheal a chruthaigh iad go léir arís imbliana i Séipéal Naomh Chaitlíona, Séipéal Naomh Eoin Baiste agus Séipéal Naomh Mhuire. Dingle Parish Pastoral Council took the decision at our November meeting to share and forward your Crib donations towards the work of Sr. Helen Ryder in Haiti and Fr. P.J. Fitzgerald, Kiltegan Missions, South Africa. Received to date: €1,572.19
Irish missionary Sr. Helen Ryder kindly forwarded the following information to the Parish.
Sr. Helen is based in Haiti with the Holy Union Sisters (LSU Sisters) for the past 18 years. Life has returned to normal in Haiti following the devastating Earthquake 5 years ago. Funds are difficult to come by now and she lives in the city of Port-au-Prince, in an area where unemployment is 80%. Many children do not go to school and every day people are looking for help, food, money for medical assistance, money for school so that they will not be thrown out, help with funeral costs, help with travel to the end of the country to visit a dying relative.
Sr. Helen says: “I would intend to put the money you send towards the Post-Primary school in the Parish. A school founded the same time as the Parish in 1999 at the request of the parents. The school has 350 students, aged 12 – 20 or so. It is recognized by the State and there ends the support they get from the Government. Teachers are not paid… All must be met by the parents’ fees… Each month $5,000 must be found.” She also said that only about 5% of students finish their post primary education.
The aim of the LSU Sisters when they arrived in Haiti was to give a hand where they can and that principle remains in place.

Laochra an Chreidimh II – Patrons
Pope Francis reminds us of the joy of the Gospel!
Who is Pope Francis?
Pope Francis is the 266th pope. The white smoke that signalled a new pope had been elected plumed on 13th March 2013, at the end of the second day of the papal conclave.
People were very surprised that a man called Jorge Mario Bergoglio had been elected pope, and many did not know who he was. But his humbleness, openness, and his straightforward, no-nonsense manner soon allowed him into the hearts of the faithful and the world.
Has there been a Pope Francis before?
This is the first time that a pope has chosen the name Francis. He picked the name Francis in honour of St. Francis of Assisi, who is the founder of the worldwide Franciscan order, champion of the poor and patron saint of animals and the environment, to name but two. Pope Francis has great concern for the poor and has asked the people of the Church and the world to help those struggling in poverty.
Where is he from?
Pope Francis was born on 17th December 1936 in Buenos Aires, the capital city of Argentina, South America. He is the son of Italian parents. He joined The Society of Jesus (the Jesuits) as a novice and was ordained a priest in 1969. He became archbishop of Buenos Aires in 1998 and a cardinal in 2001.
Is it true he is a pope of many firsts?
Pope Francis has brought in a new style to the papacy. He does not care much for the frills and fanciness that go along with being pope. One break with the norm is that he has chosen to live in the Vatican Guesthouse instead of the Papal Residence. The pope lives simply; he even drives around in a thirty year old vehicle, although he could – as past popes have done – own expensive cars. (To be con’d)
