Corca Dhuibhne Pastoral Area Mass
Corca Dhuibhne Pastoral Area will commemorate the Great Famine 1845-1852, with a Mass celebrated by Bishop Ray Browne at Ballyduff Cemetery, Cloghane, on Fri. 25th July 2014 at 7.30pm. (100 metres off the main Castlegregory/Dingle Road on the Dingle side of Stradbally and signposted). This Cemetery contains the remains of many people who died during the Famine. Nearby is the remains of Liscarney House, which served as an auxiliary Workhouse at the time.
The Famine in the Dingle Peninsula
In April 1851 the Board of Guardians pleaded for its own dissolution, saying that the poverty of the ratepayers themselves meant that the funds necessary to run the Union just could not be collected. This request was turned down and so the Board had to struggle on. The sheriff seized beds, bedding and furniture from the Workhouse, as well as crops belonging to the Union, in August 1851, but he then agreed to postpone their sale to give the Board time to raise the money owned.
The escalating numbers seeking relief forced Boards of Guardians to increase their Workhouse accommodation. The Dingle Board erected temporary sheds in the Workhouse grounds and was soon renting virtually every vacant building in the town and neighbourhood for this purpose; auxiliary Workhouses were also opened at Liscarney and Monaree. None of these buildings was purpose built and only minimal sums were spent on fitting them out. During the week ending 21st June 1851, the number of Workhouse inmates in the Dingle Union peaked at 4,841, which was 17.7% of the Union’s population.

Treoraí agus Laochra Chreidimh
Dingle Parish Directory and Patrons
To highlight the 150th Jubilee of St. Mary’s Church, Dingle Parish Pastoral Council has published a colourful Directory. All Faith-based groups and pastoral services are presented together with the lives and witness of 107 heroes and heroines of the Faith. These, in the main, are the chosen Patrons of all recent Confirmation candidates who pen their stories and reasons for their choice. These biographies, already published in the Parish newsletter as a Year of Faith project, take up 60 pages of the new Directory under the Laochra an Chreidimh heading.
All seven churches and oratories are well described together with interesting facts relating to ten cemeteries across the Parish landscape. The contact details of 15 Parish committees and 8 local schools are comprehensively outlined. Tribute is paid to the outstanding witness and ministry of the Christian Brothers and Sisters of Mercy and Presentation over the past two centuries. The generous everyday Parish service of more than 500 volunteer parishioners is hailed in Treoraí 7 Laochra an Chreidimh / Dingle Parish Directory and Patrons in celebration of St. Mary’s 150 Fé Bhlath.
The Directory, featuring 100 coloured illustrations was launched by Bishop de Brún on his recent pastoral visit to the Parish and is now available for sale in the following outlets in the Parish for €5.
