It was customary to get up before sunrise to bring in the ‘summer’. In her younger days she would bring in branches from the various trees and keep these in the house until the following year. When I was young my father continued that tradition, and if he wasn’t at home my grandmother made sure that we got to bring in the summer some hours before going to school. She used to recite the little dán: Thugamar féin an samhradh linn, [We ourselves brought the summer with us, Thugamar linn é is cé bhainfidh dínn é? We brought it with us and who will take it from us? Thugamar féin an samhradh linn, We ourselves brought the summer with us, Samhradh samhradh bainne na ngamhna, Summer summer the milk of calves, Thugamar féin an samhradh linn, We brought the summer with us, Samhradh buí fé luí na gréine, A yellow summer under the setting sun, Thugamar féin an samhradh linn. We ourselves brought the summer with us. Cuileann is coll is trom is cárthann, Holly and hazel and elder and rowan, Thugamar féin an samhradh linn, We ourselves brought the summer with us, Fuiseog gléigeal Béal an Átha, Shimmering bright ash from the Mouth of the Ford, Thugamar féin an Samhradh linn. We ourselves brought the summer with us]. This was a dán with several verses, but I cannot remember the remainder of the poem”. (Verling 2003:143-144). Béarrach Mná ag Caint – (Seanchas Mhairéad Ní Mhioncháin ag Martin Verling 1999) Queen of the May / Bring Flowers of the Rarest Refrain: O Mary we crown thee with blossoms today! Queen of the Angels and Queen of the May. O Mary we crown thee with blossoms today, Queen of the Angels and Queen of the May. Bring flowers of the rarest bring blossoms the fairest, from garden and woodland and hillside and dale; our full hearts are swelling, our glad voices telling the praise of the loveliest flower of the vale! Refrain: Their lady they name thee, Their mistress proclaim thee, Ah, grant that thy children on earth be as true as long as the bowers are radiant with flowers, as long as the azure shall keep its bright hue.
