Laochra an Chreidimh II – Patrons
Naomh Breandán: Rugadh Naomh Breandán in aice le Trá Lí 484AD. Bhaisteadh an t-Easpag Eirc é. Fuair sé oideachas maith faoi stiúir Naomh Íde ar feadh cúig bliana. Oirníodh ina shagart é I 512AD. Bhí suim ag Naomh Breandán sa loingseoireacht agus thar tréimhse fiche bliain sheol sé timpeall oileáin na hÉireann ag scaipeadh Briathar Dé agus ag bunú mainistreacha. An mhainistir is cáiliúla a thóg sé ná an ceann i gCluain Fhearta in a raibh 3000 manach ann ag pointe áirithe.
Dhein Breandán ana-chuid taistil agus is é an turas is cáiliúla a dhein sé ná an ceann go dtí Talamh an Éisc i gCeanada. D’fhág Breandán agus grúpa manaigh Cuas a’ Bhodaigh i gCorca Dhuibhne i mbád beag seoil a bhí clúdaithe le leathair. Ar an slí eachtraíonn said faoin oileán a bhí lán le caoirigh. Ceaptar gurbh iad seo na hOileáin Faroe. Tá scéal eile faoi lá gur stopadar ag oileán. Lasadar tine i lár an oileáin ach nár thosaigh an t-oileán ag bogadh! Míol mór a bhí ann! Ar deireadh shroicheadar Talamh an Éisc beagnach míle bliain roimh Columbas!
Fuair Naomh Breandán bás timpeall 577AD faid is a bhí sé ag déanamh cuairt ar a dheirfiúr Bríg a bhí mar Bhan – ab ar chlochar in Eanach Dhúin.
Naomh Pátrún do mhairnéalaigh agus dóibh siúd a bhíonn ag taisteal is ea Naomh Breandán. Tá a Lá Fhéile ar an 16ú Bealtaine.
Roghnaigh mé Naomh Breandán mar bhain me taitneamh as na scéalta faoi na haistir a dhein sé agus chomh maith is maith liom uisce agus rámhaíocht.

The Marriage Referendum
Information meeting on the Marriage Referendum for Corca Dhuibne will be held on Monday May 11th in the Dingle Skellig Hotel at 8pm. Fáilte roimh cách. There will be a short presentation followed by Q&A, hosted by Mothers and Fathers Matter Kerry. Information from mfmkerry@gmail.com
“The effects of the referendum of 22 May will be far reaching for this and for future generations.
• A marriage (made up of man and woman) is not the same as the union of two people of the same sex. To distinguish is not to discriminate but to respect differences… (Pope Francis, as Archbishop of Buenos Aires, in an April 2010 Pastoral Letter)
• Married love is a unique form of love between a man and woman which has special benefit for the whole of society. To seek to redefine the nature of marriage would be to undermine it as the fundamental building block of our society. (Pastoral Statement of the Irish Catholic Bishops’ Conference December 2014)
• We cannot support an amendment to the Constitution which redefines marriage and effectively places the union of two men, or two women, on a par with the marriage relationship between a husband and wife which is open to the procreation of children. (Statement from the March 2015 Spring General Meeting of the Irish Catholic Bishops’ Conference)
• To interfere with the definition of marriage is not a simple or a trivial matter. (Archbishop Eamon Martin, Armagh Diocese, 2 May 2015)
NB: Please take home and study The Meaning of Marriage Newsletter which will be available in the Porch. Copies of Bishop Raymond de Brún’s Pastoral letter will be available shortly. Further information on www.dioceseofkerry.ie and www.meaningofmarriage.ie
Prayer to the Holy Family
Holy Family of Nazareth,
may the approaching Synod of Bishops
make us once more mindful
of the sacredness and inviolability of the
family, and its beauty in God’s plan.
Amen.
