Laochra an Chreidimh II – Patrons
Naomh Claudia: The martyr St. Claudia was the mother of Linus the second Pope. Tradition identified her as the daughter of a defeated British King who was imprisoned in Rome where his daughter Claudia became a Christian. She is the Claudia mentioned in St. Paul’s Second letter to Timothy. Her feast day is August 7th.
I chose St. Claudia because I liked the name and she stood up for what she believed in and the freedom to do what was right.
I heard the story of a lady named Claudia born in 1909 and was born into abject and total poverty and into an abusive family. Despite all of the suffering she was forced to endure, little Claudia did not give into her suffering but rather used as a tool to gain strength. At the age of six she was taken out of her family and placed into a Wish House one of the many orphanages that were then secretly run by the order. In the loving care of the Order, Claudia grew into a strong woman who joined the holy orders at the age of 22. Claudia then dedicated her life to working with the poor to ease their suffering. A number of healing miracles became associated with her and she converted a large number of people to the faith.

The Marriage Referendum
Information meeting on the Marriage Referendum for Corca Dhuibne will be held on Monday May 11th in the Dingle Skellig Hotel at 8pm. Fáilte roimh cách. There will be a short presentation followed by Q&A, hosted by Mothers and Fathers Matter Kerry. Information from mfmkerry@gmail.com
“The effects of the referendum of 22 May will be far reaching for this and for future generations. Catholic bishops are concerned that, should the amendment be passed, it will become increasingly difficult:
• To speak any longer in public about marriage as being between a man and a woman;
• To teach children in school about marriage;
• For those who sincerely continue to believe that marriage is between a man and a woman as they may be forced to act against their conscience.
(Irish Catholic Bishops’ Conference)
(Copies of the Irish Catholic Bishops’ Conference Newsletter ‘The Meaning of Marriage’ and Heather’s personal story on redefining marriage and parenting are available at the back of the Churches – please take one).

There are attempts by some in contemporary society to change the definition or understanding of what exactly constitutes marriage. Efforts to gain approval for and acceptance of same-sex unions as marriages are examples. While the Church clearly teaches that discrimination against any group of people is wrong, efforts to make cohabitation, domestic partnerships, same-sex unions and polygamous unions equal to marriage are misguided and also wrong. The Church and her members need to continue to be a strong and clear voice in protecting an understanding of marriage which is rooted in natural law and revealed in God’s law.
Today, advocacy for the legal recognition of same-sex relationships presents a new challenge to our understanding of marriage and its unique role in society … This is not compatible with seeing the family based on marriage as the necessary basis of the social order and as indispensable to the welfare of the Nation and the State. Nor does it ‘guard with special care the institution of Marriage, on which the Family is founded’ (Art. 41.3.1, The Irish Constitution) …
Often those who call for legal recognition of same-sex partnerships present it as a matter of fairness, equality and civil rights. The Church holds that basic human rights must be afforded to all people. This can and should be done without sacrificing the bedrock of society that is marriage and the family and without violating the religious freedom of individuals and institutions. To promote and protect the unique nature of marriage as the union of one man and one woman is itself a matter of justice.
