St. Gall was a monk of Bangor and set out with Columbanus for the Continent. When Columbanus was exiled from France, Gall accompanied him to Bregenz on Lake Constance. When Columbanus crossed into Italy, Gall remained in Switzerland. He lived in a hermitage, which later became the monastery of St. Gallen, the city now bearing his name. The monastery library contains many very early Irish manuscripts. His feastday is on October 16th. He died c.630.
Brazil Mission Thanks for Crib Gift
Feira de Santana,
Bahia, Brazil.
Dear Friends,

Warmest greetings and sincere gratitude from the Holy Rosary Sisters in Bahia – Brazil! We are five Sisters, on mission here since 2010 and the work we do still requires financial and spiritual help from our friends.
In August 2010, a Social Centre – “Mons. José” – was opened in the heart of the city and there, with the help of many volunteers from the parish, Sr. Mary Sinor works with the city’s street people. Your gift will be used to help feed these poor and hungry people. Photo no 1 depicts some of the clients having dinner at the centre.
The Centre for Women in situations of prostitution and/or other social risks was opened in 2011. There Sr. Augustina and some volunteers run a drop-in centre for these women and help them find alternative means of livelihood, by offering them the opportunity to be trained as professional, manicurists / pedicurists. We will use the money from your gift to buy the needed materials for the realization of the course. Enclosed is a photo (No. 2) of the materials we buy for each participant.
Sr. Therese offers courses in hand crafts i.e. sewing, massage, which help poorer women find a viable source of income. She has rented accommodation for the same and the money received will be used toward paying the rent and buying materials for use in the courses. See photos 3 and 4.
We want to thank you for your generosity and the much appreciated help towards our mission work in Bahia. We ask for your prayers also and will pray for you, our kind benefactors.

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Sr. Augustina, Sr. Mary Sinor, Sr. Therese, Sr. Helen and Sr. Gemma.
NB: See photographs in St. Mary’s Church Porch Notice Board.

Lectio Divina (Divine Reading)
Lectio Divina offers us a way of praying the Scriptures that has come down to us from the early Church and in the 5th century became the main prayer practice of the Order of St Benedict. Then in the 12th century the practice was adapted, simplified and made accessible to all the faithful. Since then, but especially in the centuries following, which was a time of great upheaval and change in the life of the Church and in society, not unlike our own times, Lectio Divina, as the prayer practice of the people has played an important part in the spiritual formation of the laity and in preparing them to play their rightful role in the life of the Church and of their society.
This I believe is what Pope Benedict XVI had in mind when in reference to the documents of Vatican II he made the following statement in 2005: “In this context, I would like in particular to recall and recommend the ancient tradition of “Lectio Divina”: “the diligent reading of Sacred Scripture accompanied by prayer brings about that intimate dialogue in which the person reading hears God who is speaking, and in praying, responds to him with trusting openness of heart” (cf. “Dei Verbum,” n. 25). If it is effectively promoted, this practice will bring to the Church — I am convinced of it — a new spiritual springtime.”
If you would like to know more about the practice of Lectio Divina you are invited to a meeting at the Diseart on Tuesday evening October 22, 7.00pm to 8.00pm. All are welcome.
If there is sufficient interest we could discuss the possibility of coming together once a week (1 hour) to share in the practice of Lectio Divina. If you have any queries you can contact me at: 086 262 5498.
