Bliain an Chreidimh – Our Patron Saints Laochra an Chreidimh No.65.
Blessed Thaddeus Moriarty was born in Castledrum near Castlemaine during the Penal Days and was ordained a priest of the Dominican Order of Preachers following studies in Spain and Portugal. He was appointed Prior of Holy Cross (alias St. Mary’s) Tralee. During the Cromwellian persecution he was arrested while celebrating Holy Mass on the Keelacloghane Mass Rock in Milltown Parish. He was imprisoned in Ross Castle, Killarney where he was tortured and then brought to Cnoc na Martírigh, Fair Hill where he was hanged on 15th October 1653.
Bishop David Moriarty restored the martyr’s Chalice to Holy Cross whose Prior entrusted it for display in the Kerry County Museum, Trá Lí. Papal Nuncio Dr. Charles Brown will be chief celebrant at the Annual Mass at Poll an Aifrinn, Keelacloghane Wood this Mission Sunday 20th October at 3.30pm. Rosary at 3.10pm.
October is Rosary Month and the spread of the Rosary is attributed to the preaching of St. Dominic. The Rosary has for centuries been at the heart of the Dominican Order. Pope Paul VI stated that: “The Rosary of Mary is the compendium of our Faith.”
For centuries, Dominicans have been instrumental in spreading the Rosary and emphasizing the Catholic belief in the power of the Rosary.
Praying the Rosary – Part I
1. Make the Sign of the Cross;
2. Say the Apostles’ Creed;
3. Say the Our Father;
4. Say three Hail Marys and the Glory Be.
5. Name the 1st mystery, and your intention then say the Our Father, 10 Hail Marys and 1 Glory Be.
6. Optional – After each decade – Fatima Prayer: “O my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of Hell; lead all souls to Heaven especially those who are in most need of Your Mercy.”
7. Name the 2nd Mystery and your intention, then say the next Decade. Repeat 5, 6, and 7.
8. Say the Hail Holy Queen, when the 5 decades are completed.
Hail, holy Queen, Mother of mercy, Hail our life, our sweetness and our hope! To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve, to thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley of tears. Turn then, most gracious advocate, thine eyes of mercy towards us, and after this, our exile, show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb, Jesus. O clement, O loving, O sweet Virgin Mary! Pray for us, O Holy Mother of God.
Joyful Mysteries:
1. The Annunciation – The Angel Gabriel came to Mary. She said Yes to God, to become the Mother of Jesus.
2. The Visitation – Mary went to visit Elizabeth, who is waiting for her Son John to be born.
3. The Nativity – Mary gave birth to Jesus in a stable in Bethlehem.
4. The Presentation of Our Lord – Mary and Joseph brought Jesus to the temple of Jerusalem.
5. Finding of Jesus in the temple – Jesus was lost in Jerusalem, but Mary and Joseph found Him preaching in the temple.
Sorrowful Mysteries:
1. Agony in the Garden – Jesus suffered in the Garden of Gethsemane, the night before He died.
2. Scourging at the Pillar – Jesus was laughed at, scourged and suffered for us.
3. Crowning with thorns – They put a crown of thorns on Jesus’ head, which pierced and hurt him.
4. Carrying of the Cross – Jesus fell three times, carrying His heavy cross to Calvary.
5. Crucifixion – Jesus suffered and died on the cross. He gave His life for us. (To be continued next week)

Lectio Divina (Divine Reading)
Lectio Divina offers us a way of praying the Scriptures that has come down to us from the early Church and in the 5th century became the main prayer practice of the Order of St Benedict. Lectio Divina, as the prayer practice of the people, has played an important part in the spiritual formation of the laity and in preparing them to play their rightful role in the life of the Church and of their society.
This I believe is what Pope Benedict XVI had in mind when in reference to the documents of Vatican II he made the following statement in 2005: “In this context, I would like in particular to recall and recommend the ancient tradition of “Lectio Divina”: “the diligent reading of Sacred Scripture accompanied by prayer brings about that intimate dialogue in which the person reading hears God who is speaking, and in praying, responds to him with trusting openness of heart”.
If you would like to know more about the practice of Lectio Divina you are invited to a meeting at the Diseart on Tuesday evening October 22nd, 7.00pm to 8.00pm. All are welcome.
If there is sufficient interest we could discuss the possibility of coming together once a week (1 hour) to share in the practice of Lectio Divina. If you have any queries you can contact me at: 086 262 5498. (Fr. Jim Sheehy)
