Machnamh

Lord Jesus Christ,
Teach us to be merciful
Like the heavenly Father.

Your loving gaze freed Zacchaeus and Matthew
From being enslaved by money;

Your loving gazed freed the adulteress
And Mary Magdalene from seeking happiness
Only in created things;

Your loving gaze
Made Peter weep after his betrayal
And assured Paradise to the repentant thief.

Send your Spirit so that this Year of Mercy
May be a year of grace for us and for your Church.
Send us out to bring good news to the poor,
Proclaim liberty to captives and the oppressed,
And restore sight to the blind.

We ask this through the intercession of Mary,
Mother of Mercy,
You who live and reign with the Father
And the Holy Spirit for ever and ever. Amen.

Smaoineamh
Jesus calls us to be merciful. The Bible uses the Hebrew word, “hesed”, for mercy referring to steadfast love, and the Greek word for mercy is “eleos” meaning “loving kindness”. So we reach out in kindness and love to someone who is sick, troubled or lonely.
